Obama has been a Senator for less than a single term. He doesn't have enough of a record to compare to Biden. But he is what he is. He never claimed to be any liberal either. Just during the primaries when he wanted those votes and then moved right back to the center once he got the nom like they all do.

It's pretty amazing that bloggers are doing the heavy lifting the McCain staff should have done. We are in a new world.
Not really. George McGovern didn't do his homework, either. Only it was journalists doing the heavy lifting back then and not a bunch of bloggers.

Quote:
In 1972, Richard Nixon appeared unbeatable. When Senator George McGovern won the Democratic nomination for President, virtually all of the high-profile Democrats, including Ted Kennedy, Walter Mondale, Hubert Humphrey, Edmund Muskie[2] and Birch Bayh turned down offers to run on the ticket.

Having been declined by the "name" Senators, McGovern turned to lesser-known candidates, and Eagleton, who had opposed the Vietnam War, was selected on July 14 with only a minimal background check. Eagleton made no mention of his earlier hospitalizations. Newspapers soon revealed them. McGovern and Eagleton initially joked about the case with Eagleton saying he would undergo a psychiatric examination if other candidates (e.g., Nixon) would do the same. But the charges kept coming. Columnist Jack Anderson wrote a column falsely accusing Eagleton of being arrested for drunk driving — a charge that Anderson had to retract.

McGovern said he would back Eagleton “1000%”, but on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and, after new search by McGovern, was replaced by Kennedy in-law Sargent Shriver.

A Time magazine poll taken at the time found that 77 percent of the respondents said "Eagleton's medical record would not affect their vote." Nonetheless, the press made frequent references to his shock therapy, and McGovern feared that this would detract from his campaign platform.[3]

McGovern's handling of the controversy was an opening for the Republican campaign to raise serious questions about his judgment. In the general election, the Democratic ticket won only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

I don't understand how this wasn't all known before now. They have been tossing her name around since February. So sloppy.

Yup. People like her a lot.

It is premature to believe that Obama will be our next president -- unfortunately. They aren't talking about Obama's wonderful speech anymore, or the points he made -- they are talking about Palin.

heh, they won't. She is everything they want in a candidate, except she is ok with contraception and doesn't want to convert Muslims (that I know of).

For better or worse. But yes, he knocked Obama off the stage with this announcement.

I think some people might be confusing Fundie for Catholic.

Protestants are not against Birth Control, the Fundies just don't want unmarried people having sex. Thus the abstinence for teens thing.

The fundies love her because she is rabidly anti-choice, doesn't want gays to marry etc.

Hell, she even threw them bones over the creationism in schools thing. She would give them most of what they wanted if they "voted for it". Like denying gay partners health care.

The Council For National Policy Meets In Minn, Vets Palin

By Max Blumenthal Mon Sep 01, 2008 at 02:48:46 AM EST

Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC's spectacle in Denver, the country's most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy.

CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul Weyrich. At a secret 2000 meeting of the CNP, George W. Bush promised to nominate only pro-life judges; in 2004, then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told the group, "The destiny of the nation is on the shoulders of the conservative movement." This year, thanks to Sarah Palin's selection, the movement may have finally aligned itself behind the campaign of John McCain.

Though Dobson and Perkins reportedly attended the recent CNP meeting in Minneapolis, a full roster of guests would be nearly impossible to require. The CNP deliberately operates below the radar, going to excessive lengths to obscure its activities. According to official CNP policy, "The media should not know when or where we meet or who takes part in our programs before or after a meeting." Thus the CNP's Minneapolis gathering was free of reporters. I only learned of the get-together through an online commentary by one of its attendees, top Dobson/Focus on the Family flack Tom Minnery.

Minnery described the mood as CNP members watched Palin accept her selection as John McCain's Vice Presidential pick. "I was standing in the back of a ballroom filled with largely Republicans who were hoping against hope that something would put excitement back into this campaign," Minnery said. "And I have to tell you, that speech by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin -- people were on their seats applauding, cheering, yelling... That room in Minneapolis watching on the television screen was electrified. I have not seen anything like it in a long time."

Minnery added that his boss, Dobson, has yearned for a conservative female leader like Margaret Thatcher to emerge on the American scene. And while Palin is no Thatcher, "she has not rejected the feminine side of who she is, so for that reason, she will be attractive to conservative voters."

The members of the Council for National Policy are the hidden hand behind McCain's Palin pick. With her selection, the Republican nominee is suddenly -- and unexpectedly -- assured of the support of a movement that once opposed his candidacy with all its might. Case in point: while Dobson once said he could "never" vote for McCain, he issued a statement last week hailing Palin as an "outstanding" choice. If Dobson's enthusiasm for Palin is any indication, he may soon emerge from his bunker in Colorado Springs to endorse McCain, providing the Republican nominee with the grassroots support of the Christian right's single most influential figure.

I'm really going to pass out now but not before passing this gem along:

Quote:
Palin and her husband, Todd, said their daughter plans to marry the child's father - who sources said is Levi Johnston - and that both "are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family."

On his MySpace page, Johnston boasts, "I'm a f - - -in' redneck" who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes.

"But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s- - - and just f - - -in' chillin' I guess."

"Ya f - - - with me I'll kick [your] ass," he added.

He also claims to be "in a relationship," but states, "I don't want kids."

Ah, schadenfreude.

It's got nothing to do with this teen - I do feel bad for her.

It's got everything to do with her mom, though, and how she supports abstinance only sex ed. What a great example of how well that works. And her own troopergate. I mean, really.

Which can't help but make people wonder, what the hell was McCain thinking? And how would he be thinking in the future when it came time to pick a cabinet, pick a foreign policy, or fuck it all, pick his nose?

God damn, it just gets better. As I get ready for bed, I'm reading that she was once a member of a party that wanted Alaska to secede from the USA — you know, the country she wants to be vice president of. From the NY Times:

Quote:
While G.O.P. veep choice Sarah Palin is likely most concerned with her daughter’s present condition, Jake Tapper at Political Punch has a blast from her past:

Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States.

And while McCain’s motto — as seen in a new TV ad — is “Country First,” the AIP’s motto is the exact opposite — “Alaska First — Alaska Always.”

“Individually, you can come to your own judgment about how consequential these stories are,” writes Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo. “What they show pretty clearly now — in addition to the news that the McCain campaign is only now sending in a vetting team — is that John McCain didn’t do any serious vetting of Palin before he invited her to join his ticket and, he hopes, become Vice President of the United States. Fundamentally, of course, this is about John McCain. And the real issue here is what this slapdash decision says about his judgment.”

Sarah Palin - she of the apparent vaginal muscles of steel, has a 5 month old child which has downs syndrome. Now, here is where I start questioning her judgement, because this woman, who has 4 previous children (and forgive me here, but every woman I have run into with multiple kids have each labour get shorter and shorter), is in TEXAS when her water breaks. Instead of doing the smart thing a 40 something woman (already high risk due to age, but knowing she is having a handicapped child and is in premature labour) hops a plane and proceeds to jet hop for 13 plus HOURS. She flys to Anchorage, and then instead of going to the rather large hospital (I think she was on jet leg 3 at this point so we are several hours into a PREMATURE LABOUR OF A HANDICAPPED CHILD) then proceeds to travel to podunk Alaska to have the baby. In a clinic.

If this is the judgement America wants as second in command...

Now, this woman who wants to stop sex ed in schools, remove polar bears from endangered lists as they get in the way of oil drilling, teach abstinance only, ban abortion and the womans right to choose (whether its to marry at 17 and have the kid or end the pregnancy), and teach creationism in SCIENCE class, has thrust her 17 year old pregnancy daughter front and centre while her running mate blames liberal blogs for exposing said daughters complete lack of judgement.

I agree with Obama, but when a large portion of your platform is banning safe sex ed and promotiong abstinance only "because it is proven to work" when your own daughter gets knocked up is an issue that affects the campaign.

And her actions the day she herself was in labour show a scary lack of judgement as well. Sorry, if I am in my 40's, and go into premature labour of a handicapped child (well it wouldn't happen because - and I have said it before - I would terminate the pregnancy because thankfully I still have that choice in Canada) I am not going to jet hop and ignore advanced hospitals to have the kid in podunk Alaska.

EDIT

And don't start on the doctors saying she was okay to travel. Labour can go bad in the blink of an eye, and I don't know of many good doctors who would tell a woman in premature labour of a handicapped child that 12 plus hours of flying while in labour is a great birthing plan. That's fucking stupid.

McCain made another bone headed move, and I say this as someone who at one point thought McCain was the republican with good sense.

I was so happy to read about her daughter's pregnancy. I know I shouldn't be happy about it, but I am. A HUGE wrench in McCain's campaign is a HUGE wrench in McCain's campaign, and that's enough to make a LOT of people very happy. I'm not happy for her daughter--I feel really sorry for her daughter, mainly because of who she has to put up with for a mom, and I feel sorry for the kid-to-be as well unless the child is given up for adoption where it could have a chance of growing up in a family that isn't completely fucked up. The daughter will probably not have a chance to raise the child herself nor will she probably be prepared to raise a child.

But sorry, even when looking at her daughter's situation, I still laugh--I laugh when I see SO many of the people who are trying to push that whole "holiness" crap end up seeing reality slap them in the face (usually republicans) in an almost brutal manner in the public eye. It's enough to make just about anyone happy, except for those who peddle that holiness crap and those that desperately want McCain to win.

It's like watching Brainy Smurf get tossed on his head after bragging for several minutes.

17 and pregnant is nothing to laugh at. Ever. Even with her advantages, she has such a hard road ahead of her.

Now..if you want something to laugh at, last night Campbell Brown on CNN tried to get Tucker Bounds to explain Palin's national security experience. I do get a kick out of watching someone like Tucker Bounds squirm about questions he doesn't want to answer.
