Obama's speech -- OMFG WOW

I <3 Obama. I want to have his children. Well Michelle's already done that but you know if he wouldn't have the infidelity thing to face I'd do more and I don't say that for just anyone.

I couldn't even believe it when he talked about how we were all patriots and the common ground we could find. Maybe he really is the Kwisatz Haderach and he can do all that stuff and this won't be a really nasty dirty campaign and red and blues can come together and not want to kill each other anymore.

I can hope can't I?

I think we all want to hope, Viv. And that's one of the beauties of our system - every 4 years we get another chance to hope.

I'll tell you what. If McCain can't strike that kind of chord with voters, it's all over but the shouting and we'll have our first black President.

I can't remember the last time an election gave me a reason to hope.

This has been great so far - but please - no spoilers (and see my other thread <grin>) - I'm watching on TiVo!

Does the main character live through the end of the episode?! (okay that was in bad taste, but lulz)

I guess I'm a cynic. I can't remember any convention speeches in my entire life that weren't almost clones of each other, filled with promises they'll find harder to keep than make and high-minded sentiments that sound great and stir the heart, but don't really put food on our tables or money in our pockets once the candidate took office.

Obama was no different in that respect, I thought - but to me the difference with him is the character of the man behind the words. I think he is genuine and I think he honestly believes he can do all those things he said.

It's a good start. I just hope the glow lasts once he's in office.

Well some of that won't be him. The Confidence of the public matters some.

Remember when Clinton got in there was an instant upswing in hope, the market, etc. which lasted a few months.

Well it wasn't the food on the table thing that moved me. I mean that's great and maybe he will and maybe he won't. It will largely also depend on the makeup of Congress.

But the thing that got to me was the talk of the country coming together. Of his promise not to smear McCain as not a patriot, of him speaking well of McCain the man, while disagreeing with McCain's social policies. Of saying that we can disagree on issues while respecting each other.

I think if there's anything that's hurt this country the most in the last 8 years its the divisiveness. Its the demonizing of the people who don't agree with you and I'm as guilty of it as anyone. And while nothing will make me say Bush is a good man (well maybe someone worse than Bush) I have friends who are conservatives and so does everyone else (except maybe Richie).

So anyway it was the talk of finding common ground and respecting each other that I found the most powerful.

It might be bullshit but damn that bullshit felt good to hear. And its been a long time since I heard it.

Bah, he is just another politician saying whatever will get him elected. No matter how well he spoke that'll probably be the bottom line. Even though I didn't or wanted to see him speak, or any others at this and future conventions. I guess this make me Cynical.

This was really good stuff. If I play the age card, it isn't for one millisecond to devalue anyone younger, especially not anyone within the first one or two presidential campaigns in your life...

But I go back a ways, and I had my hopes dashed decades ago by assassins bullets. I had worked hard for people I believed in, and they didn't just not get to fulfill their promise, they died. My hopes, and my very belief in the goodness of people to govern one another by a vote of the people, suffered.

I'm hoping once again.

To the cynics who would laugh, behind their backs or to my face, I can only say this: if he wins, and it is still a big if, and then fails, it won't be any worse than not one, but two four-year terms of the most embarrassingly unintelligent and willfully malicious administration this country has seen, possibly forever. And for all their blights, for all the hurt visited upon myself and those I share this country with, the thing that offends and hurts me most is the divisive bile they have spread, and the populace that is so numbed to the concept of working together.

It can't be worse. And my heart tells me that there is every reason to believe that it can be much, much better. The next 60+ days will be about getting my head in sync with my heart, and doing whatever I can to convince others of the same. I've never felt it more important to go out of my comfort zone, and I'm going to do it in full knowledge that it might not work. I won't let my passivity allow the status quo to continue.

Enough.

I think that finally, Barack Obama has truly made the case for why he should be president, and had that be the center of his message. While he certainly hit hard at McCain, he didn't dwell as much on McCain's flaws as he did on what he himself will do as president and what drives him to do so. The message was much more about the needs of the American people, and how he plans to respond to them. I do truly hope he gets the chance - if he accomplishes even a small part of what he has proposed, it will make things dramatically better.

That. Was. Awesome.

I voted in the last two pres. elections, but this year was the first that I actually got involved. I caucused for him, I served as a delegate to my senate district convention, I donated time and money for the first time. I'm generally a cynical person, but he really does seem genuine, and it's got me hoping again.

/me agrees and thank yous are not enough.

A tear ran down my eye. I'm 34. You're older than me, and I have always made sure I respect my elders.

Thank you for re-enforcing my habit.

I switched from Independent to Demo for the first time ever to vote for Obama in the PA primary.

I've since switched back, but after tonight, my mind is made up.

I never voted for Bush, but I'm a recurring Specter voter.

I guess I'm cynical, but if any politician inspires "hope", then I know it's
