Once many moons ago, I was a writer-for-hire. My company sent me a potential client, a woman who had written a book about body language. I was to write promotional material for it.

She claimed her book went farther than any other on the topic - explaining the meaning not only of folded arms and eye contact, but of other unconscious...bodily actions. It was to be hailed as a definitive work.

We met in my office for the first time. She handed me the book, fresh off the press. I scanned the cover, and turned it over to read the back cover blurbs. I read down the list of some of the bodily actions that would be discussed in its pages. Among them was a simple word.

Leakages.

I repeated the word in a burst of uncontrollable laughter witha question mark at the end, as in "Bwaahha! 'Leakages?' Bwahhhaaahaa!"

Between clenched teeth, she tried to explain that when we are in the company of others, everything - down to belly rumblings - has meaning. And so...it follows...that if anything comes out of any orifice, including - yes - anal leakage - it can be interpreted as communication of a subconscious kind. I was almost able to control my sniggering as she spoke.

Needless to say, I did not get the contract.
