I thought it was in PETAs mission statement to go too far. This allows them to be both counterculture and misunderstood.

I was on a business trip with my new director recently. She's the dingbat I posted about in Off Topic who still sleeps with a blankie.

We were having lunch at this quaint little sidewalk bistro and I made a crack about PETA. She gave me this sober look, paused a minute and said...

"I'm a member of PETA."

All I could think of to say was "I'm sorry," but it wasn't the apology she thought it was.

Claiming that the "murder" of millions of broiler hens equates to the Nazi Holocaust, and trying to dump tranquilizers into a lake to disrupt a bass fishing tournament are just two examples of the sort of nutbags these people are.

And I work for one.

Amanda Beard goes Nekkie for PETA

Quote:
Ms Beard, a double Olympic Champion, posed for a nude picture as part of a publicity campaign run by the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The swimmer, who is no stranger to showing a little skin - she posed naked for a centerfold in Playboy Magazine last year - said she was determined to use the Olympic platform as a stage for her views.
Hey, Amanda? Listen, sweetie, if you've already been in Playboy naked it's just not news any more, ok? Now if you were Cindy McCain we could get some reporters together or something.

I wonder when PETA is going to go to bat for defenseless bacteria and other single-cell creatures.

Or maybe . . . plants!

How do they decide which life is life that must be preserved, and which isn't?

I'm very fond of chickens, actually, but a chicken is just about the stupidest creature that ever walked the earth. Probably some viruses do higher-level thinking than a chicken does.

Every day, millions of people wash their hands.

Every day, billions of bacteria are cruelly deprived of their lives.

I don't understand how PETA can be such heartless asses to people in a campaign to promote kindness to animals. Think of the woman's family and the family of her murderous husband - I'm sure that really helped them in their grief.

Here's something from PETA about it:

While people are rightly horrified at the thought of Hopkins' frozen wife, we're hoping that some good might come from pointing out that there's something wrong with stowing away any flesh. To highlight this, PETA has launched a new thought-provoking billboard, which we're attempting to run in Mobile, Alabama. We hope it makes some folks stop and think about how everyone—not just humans—is made of flesh, blood, bone, and emotions.

It makes me stop and think that PETA needs find its humanity and get some perspective. "Something wrong with stowing away any flesh" - WTH? This is brainless.

Here's my response. Tonight, in honor of PETA, I'm going to go out for the biggest, rarest, juciest goddamn steak I can find. I'm thinking the chicken wing appetizer first, and if I could think of a dessert with meat in it, I'd buy that, too. I'm wearing leather boots, and since I'll be on the bike, I'll be on a leather seat wearing leather gloves, buffalo hide chaps, a leather belt, and anything else I can find that involves dead animals. Unfortunately, my jacket is a synthetic kevlar based material.

Offal mousse doesn't sound very appetizing. I'm only willing to go so far to prove my point to PETA.

(plus, I really just wanted a steak and this is as good an excuse as any)

PETA may be a bunch a nuts, but I still care about the mistreatment of animals. Especially in the industrial farming sector.

Okay, but PETA doesn't.

The overwhelming majority of animals brought to their rescue shelter, around 80%, are euthanized. A government-run ASPCA shelter three miles away from that finds homes for all but about 30% of the animals they get. Both shelters take in roughly the same number of animals.

The majority of PETA's budget is spent on advertising. Not taking care of animals, not donations to other shelters, but ads comparing eating a hamburger to the Holocaust and wearing a leather jacket to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

By all means, everyone should care about the mistreatment of animals. But no one should donate time, energy, money or concern to this organization that only cares about pushing its propaganda and bizarre agenda.
