Acting Presidential

/rant on

Ok...we can talk about policies and platforms, or debate whether Democrats or Republicans are right on issue after issue. But, there is also how one behaves in public. Because the President is not just a policy maker, or "the decider" if you prefer a Bushism.

How our President handles himself in public settings reflects directly on how we see ourselves as a nation, and how the rest of the world sees us.

There is a "right" way

Obama Unfazed by Heckler

Quote:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama came to Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea Tuesday afternoon to talk about his energy policies, as he had earlier in the day in Youngstown.

But before he could delve into the topic, a man in the press photo gallery interrupted him, shouting complaints that the Illinois senator had not started the program with the Pledge of Allegiance. Many in the packed gymnasium murmured and some booed the disruption, but Obama took the heckler in stride and asked him to lead the pledge.

And there is a wrong way:

Quote:
We have a lot of work to do. It's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border. -McCain on Geography
Quote:
You know that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran. - McCain on Foreign Policy
Quote:
Maybe that's a way of killing them. --responding to a report that $158 million in cigarettes have been shipped to Iran during Bush's presidency despite restrictions on U.S. exports to that country
Quote:
"Thanks for the question, you little jerk." - to a high school student after being asked about his age
Quote:
F**k you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room. - delivered to Sen. John Cornyn(R) during a floor debate
and of course (because I am still furious about it):

Quote:
As the senator made his way through a sea of motorcycle enthusiasts...he was surrounded by scores of beer drinking men and scantily clad women...

Indeed, McCain felt so comfortable at the event that he even volunteered his wife for the rally’s traditional beauty pageant, an infamously debauched event that’s been known to feature topless women.

“I encouraged Cindy to compete,” McCain said to cheers. “I told her with a little luck she could be the only woman ever to serve as first lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.”
/rant off

I apologize for the rant. And if I offended anyone to greatly. I simply find the differences between these two people, as human beings, to be glaring and stark.

You really need to get a grip over the Miss Buffalo Chip thing. It's really obvious you don't have much experience with public speaking when you continue to harp on something that was just something light-hearted for his speech.

Um the 57 states part clearly sounds like it was a joke. But I guess if you're going to pull quotes out of context I can't help you.

I won't speculate on the Sioux City quote because anything posted on Michelle Malkin's blog is shit.

Where's the source for the first quote? You linked the other two.

You know, I can easily forgive gaffes made because of fatigue, or just an innocent mistake.

McCain's Iraq-Pakistan statement is one. I am sure he meant Afghanistan, and I shouldn't have included it in my list.

Obama saying 57 instead of 47 is another

And Obama saying Sioux City (in Iowa), instead of Sioux Falls (in South Dakota) is another. Especially when he explained (in the full quote) that he had come from months of campaigning in Iowa. Michelle Malkin was just being her normal witchy self.

It is when what they say are not innocent mistakes, but reveal who they really are that are telling. When heckled yesterday, Obama didn't have the man tazed, didn't have security drag him out, and didn't get into some shouting match. He dealt with him like a polished, admirable leader. McCain made stripper jokes about his wife....

I fail to find even a scant amount of offense to saying "I think my wife's hotter than your womenz." Fuck, a man can't even complement his woman anymore.

McCain's a tool, sure, but you're the one upset about him talking up his wife to a bunch of drunk bikers. WTF's your deal there?

No, I think the 57 states part was meant to be a joke.

The full speech from that clip is "...over the last 15 months we've traveled to every corner of the United States. I've now been in fifty.... seven states (laughter in the background, questioning inflection as he looks at the crowd) I think, one left to go-- one left to go, Alaska and Hawaii I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit but my staff would not justify it."

If you take that literally, that means he believes there are a total of 60 states, and he was barred from visiting Alaska and Hawaii.

It was clearly a joke.

Undoubtedly you think a REAL MAN (TM) offers his woman up to others, but I'd like to think we aren't misogynists like you and have a higher barometer for our politicians.

I agree with Obama's poise, however; wtf is wrong with being a stripper?

I didn't realize the bikers were heckling McCain, but if that's really what prompted his comment, I think that was the perfect solution. ALWAYS distract angry bikers by making them think of half naked women. It's a rule.

I think McCain is acting presidentially...

Reminds me of Ronald Reagan.

Here's one place, Joshua.

Obama Blunder

Of course, this is also an important part of the same incident:

Quote:
As he concluded his remarks a few minutes later, he appeared to realize his faux pas.

"There are going to be times when I get tired. There are going to be times when I get weary. There are going to be times when I make mistakes," he said.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said later that the senator meant to say "at least 10," instead of 10,000.
Notice...he caught his mistake right there, and admitted his mistake!

That's not what makes him a misogynist.

I think Clinton ruined the whole act Presidential thing, and everyone seemed to approve. So now you can do what you want and still be Presidential, with no accounting for class, decorum, or setting the proper example for youth.

Also if you hear the many clips of Obama and Hecklers, he doesn't sound that impressive, although I guess the bar is pretty low for being impressive.

There is a world of difference between "Look at my wife, isn't she gorgeous?", and "Hey, Cindy! Show 'em your tits!".

McCain's comments struck me as closer to the latter statement than the former.

edit: and to keep this on topic..the first statement is presidential...the second is decidedly not!
