actually, its quite worse. You are assuming that both vehicles weigh the same in your example.

Because the car weighs much more, the scooter is going to decelerate and then accelerate backwards at a high rate of speed....the car basically not even being affected by the collision. That rapid change in direction is extremely destructive.

Motorcycles get more stable the faster they go (up to a point, obviously).
Yeah, my scooter mad housemate who was also a mechanical engineer broke it down for me somewhere along those lines. It was compounded with these guys because they heavily modded their Lambrettas and Vespas to go hella fast for a scooter, as well as all sorts of crazy chopper type setups. Fun though.

That's what I wanted to ask. Do you guys over there distinguish between bikers and bikies?

I gotta head on home now, but I have to ask you what a "bikie" is.

(I'll check in later)

Well, not sure how much the general public here makes the distinction, because you kind of have to be moving in certain circles to be fully aware of what's going on. Bikers are people who like riding bikes, inluding clubs who just like riding bikes, so, just regular people.

Bikies however, are pretty much criminal organisations who like riding bikes. In my city, they run things, drugs, loansharking, club security (which is how I know a lot of them) etc. There's about 5 major gangs, and they're pretty fucking hardcore, and pretty violent between themselves. From time to time it spills out into the clubs, guns and stuff start going off. The last club I worked at, a rival gang to our security came in one night and destroyed the place, put two staff in hospital, and the subsequent publicity killed the club forever (and we were the hottest club in town at the time).

I did however spend three years at art school with a member of one of these gangs, and he was as gentle as a lamb there, we were pretty good friends. But some of the guys I've met, scary, scary motherfuckers. I've rubbed shoulders with at least two infamous murderers.

Ah, I got it now.

In America, this would be a 'biker', except we just call them "people who like to ride bikes for pleasure":

Then we have the Hells Angels, the Outlaws, and other gangs:

Here's the challenge: Walk up to a Hell's Angel and call him a "bikie".

He's waiting!

I have a pretty good story I'd share, but probably not here.

Pretty much as Cindy said. In my area, ther are the "bikers" who are in clubs or ones that just like to ride.

Then there are the biker gangs like the Hells Angels and such who are generally just into trouble and mischief.

So I guess I would say the two groups are "Bikers" and "Biker gangs"

Yep - we distinguish between bikers and outlaw bikers, but they are all bikers. There's just a hell of a HUGE difference between bikers like me and a Hell's Angels biker.

Those guys are frackin' terrifying! I'd rather piss of some inner city street gang. At least they'll kill me quickly.
