I find it incredibly Ironic that only a few years ago the Media loved McCain for being a maverick republican who displayed an admirable bi-partisan type of attitude.

In fact a lot of Democrats used to remark how they admired McCain. And how they wished more Republicans followed his example

Now that he's the nominee and facing off against a democrat though he is all of a sudden some stodgy conservative who plays dirty election tricks and is just another Bush.

How the heck did this all come about?

Was the old hyped up media image of McCain wrong? Or is the new Hyped up media image of McCain wrong?

I doubt either image was ever totally correct. But he has definitely moved much more toward the party line recently. If you look at his voting record, in 2007 his Senate votes aligned with Bush's desires 95%. This year, his votes align 100%.

If his Paris/Brittany/Obama add wasn't dirty then I don't know what is.

And many of his campaign advisers have close Bush or Rove ties.

And many of his policy statement are an extension of Bush's: War with Iran, troops in Iraq 100 years, more top 1% tax breaks, etc.

I visited his website and I don't get that from his platform at all.

Quote:
“I do not want to keep our troops in Iraq a minute longer than necessary to secure our interests there. Our goal is an Iraq that can stand on its own as a democratic ally and a responsible force for peace in its neighborhood. Our goal is an Iraq that no longer needs American troops. And I believe we can achieve that goal, perhaps sooner than many imagine. But I do not believe that anyone should make promises as a candidate for President that they cannot keep if elected. To promise a withdrawal of our forces from Iraq, regardless of the calamitous consequences to the Iraqi people, our most vital interests, and the future of the Middle East, is the height of irresponsibility. It is a failure of leadership. “
Here's the thing: You have to put aside the campaign rhetoric and realize that odds favor us being mostly out of Iraq before the 2012 elections no matter what, barring some additional surges by Iran/Syria. So technically, both McCain and Obama would probably be able to keep this campaign promise - it's all in how it's being used as a plank right now and how it appeals to their constituency. Obama is appealling to the "get out now" crowd and McCain is appealling to the "get out when it's over" crowd.

On Iran:

Quote:
Syria and Iran have aided and abetted the violence in Iraq for too long. Syria has refused to crack down on Iraqi insurgents and foreign terrorists operating within its territory. Iran has been providing the most extreme and violent Shia militias with training, weapons, and technology that kill American and Iraqi troops. American military spokesmen have also said there is evidence that Iran has provided aid to Sunni insurgents.

The answer is not unconditional dialogues with these two dictatorships from a position of weakness. The answer is for the international community to apply real pressure to Syria and Iran to change their behavior. The United States must also bolster its regional military posture to make clear to Iran our determination to protect our forces and deter Iranian intervention.
Seems to me there's a difference between "war with Iran" and "international community applying pressure".

so basically he is a sell-out now?

Or maybe he was always a sell-out but that wasn't news back when he wasn't competing against a Democrat.

I don't support either candidate personally .. Its just amazing how perception matters so much more than substance in politics now.

Obama is being sold as the answer to our problems when his actual political experience is pretty light.

So is Hillary's although she probably had more experience with an actual Presidential administration than either McCain or Obama.

McCain at one time was an extremely popular moderate/centrist and now he isn't.

Neither Gore or Kerry had a chance of running again - why is that? because they "lost already?" A candidate cant run again anymore due to the fact they accumulate too many bad stories to be electable now?

It seems the Media of all varieties has too much impact on the process now.

Truth/journalistic integrity aren't what they were a few decades ago and it will cost us eventually.

If you take that literally, that means he believes there are a total of 60 states, and he was barred from visiting Alaska and Hawaii.

It was clearly a joke.
No, it was a simple misspeak. Not a joke. I am sure he was thinking about being to all 50 states, but then wasn't at 3 so that is where the 7 came from. It was a simple mistake. It happens.

I am not holding it against him, but I don't believe he was trying to be funny. I also don't believe he thinks there are 60 states.

It wasn't his official platform that I was referring, but to statements he has made in various interviews, town halls and such.

Things like his "bomb bomb Iran" joke, or his "that's one way to kill them" joke.

Or when he said he would be fine if we occupied Iraq for 100 years.

Well, I can't say I disagree with his sense of humor, but ya, definitely not going to win you any points while running for office. Those types of statements work much better over a pint than in a speech.

Except for occupying Iraq for 100 years. If thats the plan we need to just cancel the occupation and call it what it is...colonization.

That statement right there illustrates that you yourself are victim of the perception his opposition is attempting to paint, satirically and incorrectly, of him.

Obama is not being sold as any such thing by his campaign or his supporters. Don't mistake enthusiasm for a candidate as blind acceptance of his positions or some kind of celebrity-worship bullshit. They and we know, after the last 8 years, whatever answers that exist are going to be very tough to come by, no matter who is inaugurated next January.

lol, Dancien was right, this forum is going to become impossible as November grows closer.

My tongue is already bleeding from the biting anytime I read these candidate pissing contests.

They are both lyin' ho's to me. Political scum. You know, the same people you despise in congress and the senate, usually. Now they are your guy and the fate of the world hangs on which lying scumbag politician gets the Big Prize.

So, that said, I'm not discussing this anymore, lol.

To quote Mr Obama...
