We're talking about the belief that someone or some group is an "outsider" and doesn't matter to you based on some superficial characteristic. Those attitudes can persist regardless what else happens.

You know, this is a point that Mero and I could probably wrestle to a clarification that sits well with both of us. We've certainly done this before.

I see some personal agendas being tossed into the mix and that's not particularly helpful.

I spent my childhood being refered to as the Barbarian. Also, Hanna-Barbera. My football coach called me The Barbarian also.

I've been an activist for years. When I was a teen and still thought socialism was a good thing I was in many demonstrations and arrested a few times for riotting. But when you grow older you learn that you're not going to fix society by throwing firebombs and rocks at people's homes.

Then I became an ideological activist in the field of education here. I've spoken personally several times with our minister of education. When you are face to face with someone in the government, that's when you learn quickly all your illusions were wrong. The people don't own the government. The government owns the people.

I stopped caring about the system I live in, as I learned the hard way trying to do anything to improve it is futile.

OK... this thread has clearly become an orgy of clusterfuck.

I've been successfully avoiding taping my dining room wall and prepping for painting, to say nothing of some deep house cleaning I really do need to do tonight.

If anyone want to have an actual discussion about this, let me know.

No, you're mixing things up. The book is written 19th century, and about things that happened in the 14th century.

And for the record, that book isn't what I base my morality on. It's what I got my Flemish identity from. My morality is based on a variety of sources combined with my own experiences in life.
