My Mood: | Reading the other thread about how many of you had trouble with antidepressants, I suddenly remembered that I put my own kid on Flax Seed Oil supplements about 4 months ago. She's been struggling with OCD symptoms and anxiety. I read a study about using Omego 3 fatty acid supplements for kids with ADD/OCD, Tourette's Syndrome and anxiety disorders. The results of the study were so dramatic that the parents of the kids in the study refused to stop the supplements when the study was over. In my child's case, she takes a 1000 mg flax seed oil capsule twice daily and she has had a pretty dramatic decrease in her anxiety symptoms. Another benefit has been a very noticible clearing up of her acne. Her skin hasn't looked this clear in quite awhile. One of the psychiatrists I work with told me that there are numerous studies currently looking at the role of Omega 3 fatty acids in depression too. As he put it, 150 years ago, our diets were much richer in Omega 3's and depression wasn't seen in the epidemic proportions of today. Just wanted to put this suggestion out there for those of you who couldn't take prescription medication for your symptoms. I've started taking flax seed oil too. I'll let you know if I feel any better in a few months. There are two main sources (supplement sources) of Omega 3's. One I've mentioned. The other is fish oil, which can be kinda yukky. But there is a company in Norway that makes a fish oil supplement called Coromega that's apparently palatable and doesn't give you fish oil indigestion. |

| Flaxseed oil tastes... ghastly. But it does help reduce anxiety, depression, and stress symptoms. I also add small doses of Vitamins A, D and E as well. It seems to help.

My Mood: | You can get Omega 3 in other forms. I believe certain nuts have a certain amount of Omega 3 (and 6). |

My Mood: | I ended my meds once and went straight for the natural aids I took: Sam-E, B-12, Folic Acid, Omega-3 Fish oil, and something else i cannot recall. It did nothing for me and i tried this stuff for about 5 months or so before i went back to my shrink for my regular triple 'script cocktail. If that worked for me it would be so awesome because just 1 of my 3 meds cost about $1200/month. Luckily we have only had to pay about 5-6 times because my doctor (the same one since i was diagnoses in 04) keeps me stocked in sample packets in all the prescription strengths i require up to 4-8 weeks worth or enough to last between appointments. She is really really great i would not trade her for the world. |

In my daughter's case, she wasn't in need of medication, just Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Which is why I decided to try Flax Seed Oil supplements for her. I thought it might be a beneficial adjunct to her therapy. In other cases, medication left patients with unpleasant or life-threatening side effects. I figured I'd just put this out there for those who either can't or won't take medication. It can't hurt.I started this thread with the intention of getting some info out there on taking Omega 3 supplements, not so much for touting the benefits of eating foods rich in Omega 3's (not that they aren't an important part of our diets). The supplements give you a specific measured amount every day and they're easy to take.

My Mood: | What are the natural ways of getting it? I always dislike taking pills, but if I can bring more foods that are rich in them naturally, I will try and do that. |

I'm not saying this is an alternative if you are already on meds that are working. I can't emphasize that enough. If you're on medication for depression or bi-polar disorder or anxiety, don't stop taking your meds. This is something you can add to your medication or if you can't take meds, try this and see if it helps. It's good for your heart and blood vessels too.
