Also, I am a little freaked out that it looks more lifelike than he does! The wax figure looks like something is going on behind those eyes, unlike the real one

And if I was to explain the culprit's motivation to attack a wax figure to an Iraqi or Russian person, I might use such an analogy - under the condition that Lenin's / Saddam's image in Russia / Iraq is as bad as Hitler's in Germany. But when I try to explain this to US citizens, then I obviously have to use an example that they can relate to. Comparisons like "The relationship between nation A and foreign dictator A is analogous to the relationship between foreign nation B and foreign dictator B." won't leave you any wiser.

This isn't about Hitler's role as a dictator but about his role as a focal point of mutual hatred in Germany's postwar society and the commercialization of his image next to a historically charged site, so I'll stick to my analogy.

A common misconception, mostly due to heavy influence of some anti-Stalinist pro-red quarters in the United States during much of the 20th century.

Lenin managed to kill off at least 5 million Russians/Ukrainians etc in his 6 year tenure and apart from Stalin or Hitler ("Socialism in one country", remember?) dreamt of actual Communist world conquest, since the Bolshevist "revolution" would in the mind of his times never survive if not spread to at least every corner of the globe that mattered.

Not bad for such a short reign, I must say.

I do agree that it is important to acknowledge historical accuracy. Glossing over the past only makes it more likely that we will end up repeating our mistakes, and that would not be in anyone's best interest. Though we ourselves are not charged with the crimes of the past, we are charged with safeguarding the future.
