My good friend watched the flames burning dangerously near her home today. Worried about her and so many others.

Anybody here from the northern part of California? There's a recently-started wildfire that's threatening the City of Redding (and is burning some of the outlying communities, by what I can tell). From TV station KRCR-7 (which themselves had to evacuate), "The Carr Fire has grown to 20,000 acres and is 10 percent contained. Numerous mandatory evacuations are in place." Latest I heard, the fire has just reached Redding city limits.

Meanwhile in Central California, large portions of Yosemite Park is closed as the Ferguson Fire continues to rage with only 27 percent containment. Communities in Mariposa County are under evacuation orders.

Finally, the newly-started Cranston Fire in Riverside County in southern California is at over 7500 acres, and only 5 percent contained. The city of Idyllwild and nearby communities has been evacuated. A man from Temecula has been arrested, charged with starting it and at least four other fires in the immediate area.

Wildfires aren't unusual but it seems like California and PNW have been just ravaged by them the last couple years, more populated areas than typical.

I think the unusual heat waves have something to do with it. We just had our 21st day in a row of 100+ degree heat, which isn't helping firefighters with the Ferguson Fire. And Redding reached a high of 115 degrees over a three hour period today. So there is a lot of fuel, hot and tinder-dry, available to feed these monsters.

Heatwaves are going to be the norm now. Temperatures are going to rise above 120°F/50°C in some parts of the world. In Europe it burns in Greece and Sweden, dozens of people died in Greece.

Pro tip: do not count on the feds for help unless your state voted R in 2016.

Actually I am surprised the wildfires are not more widespread as the heat wave is all over. Even NH was under a do-not-burn order recently.

I recently told a friend of mine to stop going on trips, because every time she does, something happens.

Starting from last summer:
Got robbed in Costa Rica
Trip to Tahoe took 18 hours, instead of the usual five or six, because every road she and her husband drove on was closed, due to avalanches.
Oregon, just a few days ago - Got caught in evacuation traffic from Hell as they passed through Redding to get home. What is normally only about six hours, was again about 18, because traffic and road closures.

The air quality in the SF Bay Area, particularly the East Bay, is dreadful. But at least we're getting wind.

Oh, and Milpitas, which is twenty minutes down the road from me, was on fire last week. That fire was fully contained by the time it reached the 500 acre point. So there's that.

Plus, I was walking Lake Lizardbreath* in Fremont, and got to see a helicopter come down and scoop up a bucket of water to drop all over the Sunol Grade, which was on fire for a few hours, snarling the already sucky 680 traffic corridor.

* really called Lake Elizabeth, but man does that water stink!

The heat waves don't help, but neither do the enormous Eucalyptus stands around here, and the fact that what little rain we did get last year gave us a freakishly abundant undergrowth this year. Lots and lots of fuel for the fire.

It's going to be fun this year. Time to stock up on Albuterol again.

Also, I'm going to Hell for finding twisted humor in the situation, but this is a pretty hot deal.

Yeah, your friend needs to stay home. Preferably inside a Faraday Cage.

Yeah, I saw that too. I'll be joining you.

Meanwhile, another Redding update: The Carr Fire (interestingly named, considering they've determined its cause was a vehicle malfunction) has doubled again in size overnight, now over 81,000 acres with only 5 percent containment. Three more people have died, 500+ structures have burned, and over 5,000 more are threatened. 30,000 people are under evacuation orders. Temperature in Redding reached 110 degrees today.

According to the Cal Fire map, there are currently 19 active fires burning in California. This includes the Carr Fire (83,800 acres, 5% containment), the Ferguson Fire burning outside Yosemite Park (51,671 acres, 30% containment), and the Cranston Fire burning in the Idyllwild area, near Riverside (13,118 acres, 29% containment).

We took at trip down there once and my spouse tripped on those huge culverts they have between the road and the 'sidewalk'. We wound up having to take a cab around town to find a hospital that was open (this in their capitol). Years later we found out the bone she may have broken there was misdiagnosed/mistreated and had been broken all this time.

This was taken two miles from my apartment, out by Coyote Hills.

Yay, for encroaching flames, soaring temperatures, and one of my all-time worst fears.

A couple of relatively new fires are rapidly growing in size in Mendocino County in northern California. Collectively known as the Mendocino Complex Fire, these two fires have exploded to 24,000 acres according to the Sacramento Bee. Four residences have been destroyed, and nearly 5000 are threatened. Both fires are 5 percent contained.

The Carr Fire near Redding is at over 89,000 acres and is still only 5 percent contained, according to KQED. The mandatory evacuation list is massive.

The Ferguson Fire near Yosemite Park is at 53,646 acres and is still 30 percent contained. Cal Fire expects full containment by mid-August, according to KFSN. Much of Yosemite Park remains closed due to smoke, and smoke and ash have filled the air in the Central Valley.

Yosemite is a joy to behold. I've spent a lot of time there, and it never fails to leave me completely awestruck. Last time I was in Tuolumne Meadow, a coyote appeared on the trail, and we just stood there looking at each other for a few minutes before it got bored and wandered off.

I'm always a little sad when fire ravages the wilderness there, but half the vegetation in California will only germinate in fire, so it's the natural order of things.

The real issue for people not directly affected by flames is respiratory problems. The air quality fluctuates between moderately bad to downright toxic for much of the summer/autumn fire season, and wreaks havoc on people with asthma and other lung problems.

Damn, only 2 miles from your home.
That is horribly close.
I would start packing the essentials, just in case.

The good news is there's a lot of greenbelts and roads between me and that fire. And the wind typically blows toward where the fire is. It would have to jump four lanes of road, a median, and a narrow belt of marsh water to get to me.

Plus, it's close enough to a lot of expensive buildings and businesses that firefighters would rush to put it out before it crossed any of the above.

As hot and dry as it can get here in the Summer months, Newark is basically built on marshland next to the bay. Yes, I'm concerned about fire, because who isn't? But I'm far more likely to lose my home to some donkey dickhead who cannot read a calender blowing up fireworks in the parking lot.

But apparently the cops got called on him once too often, or he's run out of bombs, because it's been eerily quiet since last week.

Wanna see something cool and terrifying?
