IHOP rebranded as IHOB

This looks like a lose-lose proposition to me. Either the change is permanent, in which case #NewCoke. Or it's a publicity stunt that is intended just to drum up a fake controversy, in which case I'm mostly going to be pissed (in so far as I care).

What the? They have a good brand built around the name, people think of that acronym well before the full name. Change it and people will not find them on a map, assume there is not one near them, and go to their competition. Even if "IHOB" comes up when you do a map search for breakfast people will just assume it is a knock-off.

Their whole "breakfast beyond pancakes" thing is just pointless. I would be surprised if there was ONLY pancakes on the menu, even though their name specifically lists only one foodstuff. That is like going into any other place with only an iconic item or two listed in the name and thinking that is all they sell. If you see a place with the word 'pizza' in the title do you not also assume you can get at least soda there? If the word is 'burger' you probably also assume they sell at least fries (ie, chips) too.

A few days ago, oura closed. The newspaper suggested it was kind of out of the blue too, like one day there was a sign that said "Sorry, We are permenantly closed, please visit Springfield."

Given that virtually everything on their site still says "IHOP" I am 99.44% sure this is a stunt.

We got our first IHOP maybe 15-20 yrs ago. Prior to that, the closest location was out of state. I remember the first time I ate at one was in Oklahoma City. We were slow to get a Waffle House, even.

The one closest to me seems to do well enough. It initially was in a little area populated by restaurants and whatnot next to a shopping mall. That mall is long gone, now replaced by Walmart, and they seem to still be doing well.

Our branch doesn't have the same feeling. Gone was the novelty and it seemed very much like a Perkins or Embers, probably through no fault of theirs, but rather novelty = interesting.

I can say that their brand as IHOP was well known even prior to their arrival here and they wouldn't be wise to change it.

And they didn't change it. Turns out it was just a publicity stunt.

I found it more annoying than entertaining, but YMMV.

No worries whatsoever. I figured that.

Am I correct in assuming that you have a fondness for their restaurants? I think that one of the reasons we didn't get them until so late is that we had Pannekoeken Huis. Now that's a breakfast restaurant that I had a fondness for. They eventually went under, or rather severely downsized, so our pickens were very slim. We still don't even have a Shoney's.

There's something about gathering with friends or family for brunch.

OMG! Shoney's! NO NO NO NO NO NONO!!

And Koda you pay attention here too.

The Shoney's in Alexandria.

We used to eat there until one prime rib night when they ran out and substituted...and I am NOT kidding here at all...

Haven't been in a Shoney's since.

Under the lighting at the all you can eat bar... I thought it was ham. Then I bit into a slice.

I have only been to a Shoney's for breakfast, on stop alongs on trips heading south. I didn't even know they did otherwise.

I believe you in that their quality is probably not the best. We have a similar problem with places like Old Country Buffet where the food is left out under strong lights for god knows how long. These places come and go. They start off with high quality, which draws in consumers, then some number cruncher gets their hands on it, and well...buy-bye quality.

The name change is a promotion because they are introducing burgers to expand their lunch and dinner offerings. It accomplished its goal - it got people talking and speculating about the name change. When was the last time you thought of IHOP? The company is not changing its name permanently, but their flagship stores do have new signs.

IHOP becomes IHOb, with 'b' for burgers

So..it's actually happening. They must be hard up to consider giving up their trademark identity.

But then, I've been saying for a long time; places the mainly appeal to the middle class are going the way of the dinosaur as the middle class disappears.

They are not giving up their identity - it's not a permanent change. It's a promotion to generate some buzz for their burgers.

Okay so that's them off the list.

I agree with Jolene; buffet restaurants used to be awesome. In Cleveland I remember a Ponderosa that had amazing crispy/juicy wings. And there was also a place called Hometown Buffet that had Swedish meatballs I woulda paid twice the price for. But there's been a serious decline in quality. I dunno if it's a cycle all the buffet restaurants go through individually, or if there's just been this industry-wide drop in standards, but it is what it is.

Dude I haven't seen a White Castle that's actually open since I was like four years old (and that is a questionable memory). All I see is buildings that used to be White Castles that are now like dentists' offices. But then every once in a while the news reminds me that White Castle restaurants are still operating...somewhere...

Of course there is more on the menu. IHOP is just a fancier version of Waffle House, who also serves everything.

Wikipedia say 420 White Castles, in the midwest, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

All this questioning of the Pancakes part.

Does iHope even have a presence outside pf the US? Because I question the "International" part.

Also no beds, so not much of a House.

The entire name is a lie.
