RIP Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain killed himself. He was 61.

My father and I watched CNN all the time. Anthony Bourdain was my favorite personality there. He always portrayed such a nice outlook on life. So sad. Goodbye, Anthony, I'll miss you.

CNN's Anthony Bourdain dead at 61

I discovered Anthony Bourdain by accident a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed dipping into various series he'd made. I liked his style and his outlook. I still don't understand anyone who likes sushi or who waxes lyrical about Vietnamese soup (or soup of any kind) and I'm still pissed off at him for swallowing the terrorist propaganda in Northern Ireland. But those are minor niggles in what I'd otherwise regard as genuine admiration. I loved his delivery and his appetite. I'm sure he could eat and drink more in an evening than I could manage in a month. I thought that he often looked a little shy or nervous and only relaxed when he could sit down to eat and drink with someone and that was endearing. I think I'll go and find a video of him stuffing his face with meat in tube like form wrapped in bread.

I saw the episode with President Obama and was pretty amazed. I liked his show. It made me want to visit the places he had.

It shows you can never truly know how desperate someones life is.

Such upsetting news, to learn he was grappling so hard with life. On screen he seemed to relish it. I most appreciated his deep respect for people, communities, and the ways in which food reflected their culture. I learned so much from watching his show, very little of it about the food itself.

I see him dancing
DON'T LOOK
He's always been so devastatingly attractive
in his black slit robe
moving so smoothly
the occasional glimpse of calves bursting with life
STOP
He sees me looking
NO
flashes a bright, beaconing smile

Behind him, the shadowy legions, each dancing their own life
Ah, there's Anthony
I smile, he's thrashing spasmodically, of course
Look way back there
DON'T LOOK
Robin's still moving, tho slowly, gently now
Until the force of his life ebbs completely
Dancing the Weakdance til the end

I scan nervously
Always expected to see Rushdie here
Anyone who writes about the Weakdance feels the lure
DON'T LOOK

Probably the intifada saved his life
Refusing to die out of sheer defiance
Can I do that?
Always so distrusted overwhelmingly attractive men!

That's right, think about the living
I squint my eyes and concentrate

You know
Not everyone sees him, or they see him embodied differently
For those who die by the rope
Do they see him in every door?
How horrible
Every door a beacon

DON'T LOOK

Very sad to read about this. Was also very sad to read about Kate Spade too.

May they both rest in peace.

Wow.

I don't have much to say apart from that.

I'm not sure I can literally say that was the last thing I was expecting to read this morning -but if it isn't, it's damned close.

I used to watch his shows regularly -and his I'm sorry to hear of the pain he was living with. I still remember the Beruit episode of "no reservations" and was impressed with the fact he pushed the boundaries of what was meant to be a light show.

I already posted about him in the Nobody Cares thread. We used to haunt the same book lovers chat room. He stopped coming after Kitchen Confidential came out and was a big success. But, we all followed him, and were hugely proud of him. I feel gut punched.

In that episode they told all the patrons to act casual. Sure the US president and Anthony Bourdain are two tables away but they're just having a meal with their date or family oblivious to that.

Depression is a terrible, terrible son of a bitch, and a lot of people who suffer from it are very good at hiding it. I am very sad that Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain are no longer with us. May they rest in peace.
