The Racism Driving American Gun Culture

Quote:
I asked why he felt the need to keep a pistol beside his bed. “Because,” he said, “someday, some thug is going to come for me and my family, and I need to be ready.”
A variation on the male power fantasy that motivates many gun owners, yes, but the part that struck me was the choice of word, “thug.” I’d seen him use this word before, on Facebook and in conversation. It always meant the same thing: A black man.
I’ve had versions of this conversation with many gun owners over the years, and found it to be a consistent truth: That “responsible gun owner” might keep his weapons safely locked away, taking them out on weekends to shoot clay pigeons or targets the way other hobbyists shoot golf balls, but if you drill down far enough you’ll find his gun ownership is motivated by a deep fear and distrust of other races.
Despite the fact that an angry white male is far more likely to kill them.

Quote:
The reason guns cannot be regulated in the USA is because of the violence, not in spite of it. The violence is necessary to maintain the fear, and the fear is necessary to maintain white male privilege. The idea that white men can and do shoot people causes every interaction with a white man to carry a tinge of threat: If you disrespect him, or merely fail to please him enough, he just might explode. When they say that two dozen dead children are the price we pay for freedom, what they mean is that they are willing to pay that price to preserve white male privilege. As recent events demonstrate, white male privilege is the preeminent policy goal for them, outweighing even honor, truth, and democracy. That they pursue it through terrorism should not be surprising; it was ever thus. That they cannot admit their true goal, even to themselves, is a side-effect of the defeat of the Confederacy. They cannot bear to be called a "racist" because to them, that term evokes "loser." When the South lost, we tied the shame of defeat to the cause of racism, hoping to kill it. Instead, it appears we have killed shame.
Bolding mine.
This explains a lot about recent US history.

Good article, thank you Ellie. It's an angle the press (and most Americans) don't cover.

And the more diverse our culture becomes, the more paranoid are those who are wedded to the old white privilege. It's the same paranoia that elected Trump's "Make America Great White Again" campaign.

Wake up America. It's time to smell the shit you've accumulated for 500 years.

What's most interesting is how many black gun owners I know.

Although, none of us are NRA members.

Swing and a miss. The NRA =/= gun owners. That's what I was going for there.
The NRA really isn't great with their decision making skills, which is something almost everyone agrees on whether they own guns or not.

There is also an uptick on the part of progressives, deciding maybe we need guns too, in case the other end of the spectrum decide to act as brown shirts.

Not that I want guns but I know enough people like me who do.

Admittedly I 'm looking at this from a long way away, but it seems to me that the NRA is essentially a marketing operation, primarily financed by the firearms industry.

Presumably they have realised that there is a limit to the number of people who may be interested in target shooting or hunting as hobbies, so the best way to increase their market is to play on people's fears in order to persuade them either that they need guns for self-defence or that they need to stockpile them because otherwise the government will soon ban their sale.

The NRA, in other words, isn't really concerned with the actual views and interests of gun owners so much as it's interested in scaring people into buying guns.

Got it in one. Any time they have an ad or something it is pretty much set to O Fortuna even if that is not the music used.

For Brits of my age, O Fortuna is irrevocably associated with adverts for Old Spice (no, not a hitherto unknown colleague of Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Baby and Posh, but an aftershave your father and your friends' fathers used).

Old Spice is still pretty popular in the US. Even Troy uses it when we can find his favorite scent.

Until I bought all the goth soap, I used to use old spice - its fairly nice and not too sweet smelling like many female bath washes.

But seriously, I've like 8 or 9 unopened goth soaps.

Doesn't black soap kind of defeat the purpose?

Nah, and honestly, most of the soap isn't black [though the bar I'm using now is black, with red and white]. But no matter what colour, its awesome stuff and not harsh at all on my skin.

Yes, actually. See, sunlight makes my rosecea flare, and this stuff calms my skin back down again.
