I didn't realise the head of NRA was a religious nutjob. Just watched some of his bizarre speech.

LOL...surprise! There's no reason a non-American would necessarily know about it of course; but religious nutjobbery is indeed a central and tremendous part of the gun-worship culture in the US. They typically speak of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution as if it were some 11th Commandment written by God himself, and the language and forcing of that connection is not accidental.

The irony is, if Jesus returned, he'd tear through the NRA offices with a bullwhip.

It almost feels like a new beginning, in a way. Average people are confronting old evils within the culture, questioning their ties with racism via BLM, sexism and harassment via "me too", the gun culture, homophobia, the 1%. Things they've always been slightly uncomfortable with, and now with a prime example in the White House they're less afraid to say "That just is not right". Drowning in the fake news and ranting chanters of extremism, the numbing narcotic of commercial media ... it's just too much.

Not everyone, obviously. But it's getting harder and harder for them to move about as if they were the owners of the culture.

Or maybe I'm ranting. But I feel something is changing.

Hertz cuts ties with NRA | TheHill

Quote:
Hertz has joined several other top car rental companies in cutting ties with the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The company wrote on Twitter on Friday that it would stop offering a discount on rental cars to NRA members.

I attribute it to the phase-out of leaded gasoline in the 1980's. Since the 1920's, Tetraethyl Lead was added to improve octane. Prior to pollution controls, it went out the tailpipes of cars, raising blood levels of lead across the country. Lead is a neurological poison - it makes you stupid and violent. People born after that time have had much less exposure, although not zero.

All those old farts who had a lifetime of exposure are the most affected. I grew up in New York City in the '60s and 70's, so I was exposed for a couple of decades, but then moved to Seattle, which is much cleaner and greener. Millenials have had much lower exposure levels.

You see a clear generational divide in all sorts of ways. Now we just need all the dumb old farts to die off.

Delta, United Airlines...Yeah, there's a couple companies that should be tight with the NRA.

Yeah really, what were most of these companies' meaningful connection to the NRA anyway? United and Delta can't both have been "the official airline of choice" of the NRA. Hertz, Budget, Avis, Alamo, Enterprise, and National can't all have been "the preferred car rental provider" of this group or its events.

I think most of these companies were offering discounts to NRA members, like what AAA members get for their membership. I'm not sure what was offered to these companies in exchange for the discounts, though, but these discounts are now off the table.

I'm also unsure of what the NRA itself was getting from these companies, if anything at all.

Exposure at points of transaction, either through stickers placed on counters or employees asking things like "Do you have an NRA card? I can offer you a discount if you present it." It's also something the NRA can point to as a benefit of membership... "Not only do you get our monthly newsletter, look at all these places that'll give you stuff too!"

Value adds are powerful things in marketing. They can be very persuasive, even if they're for things you've never used and are never likely to use. The mere thought of getting something extra gets the mind ticking over. The companies don't have to have been giving the NRA anything beyond the license to mention them and display a logo for it to have been of benefit to them.

That's true. If new NRA members were getting "welcome kits" that had coupon books with airline and rental car companies' logos in them, that's brand exposure.

It's amazing what I get from a BCAA membership. I can't imagine AAA is much different.

On that topic...
Quote:
Why did we use leaded petrol for so long? - BBC NewsAnd what of the scientist who first put lead in petrol?
By all accounts, Midgley was a genial man who may even have believed his own spin about the safety of a daily tetraethyl lead handwash.
But, as an inventor, his inspirations seem to have been cursed. His second major contribution to civilisation was the chlorofluorocarbon, or CFC, which improved refrigerators, but destroyed the ozone layer.
In middle age, afflicted by polio, Midgley applied his inventor's mind to lifting his weakened body out of bed. He devised an ingenious system of pulleys and strings. They tangled around his neck, and killed him.
