Laughing that some of his 'stand up to the NRA' talking points, like the age limit, is already being backpedaled.

And here's a follow-up:

What I really like about Jefferies is that he sums up the entire gun control debate in a nice package that I can agree with.

They had to have the weapons checked at the door to make sure they weren't loaded, and at that time the triggers were secured with zip ties for extra protection. It *was* a renewal of vows ceremony, after all. We all know how violent those can get.

During NRA conventions, gun injuries drop 20% nationwide—63% in hosting state
Quote:
When gun enthusiasts gather for the National Rifle Association’s annual conventions, rates of gun-related injuries and deaths drop by 20 percent nationwide—and a whopping 63 percent in the hosting state—according to an analysis published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The finding was based on an analysis of insurance data on gun injury rates during NRA conventions from 2007 through 2015, as well as rates three weeks before and three weeks after each of the conventions. The researchers behind the work—health policy expert Anupam Jena, MD, PhD of Harvard Medical School and economist Andrew Olenski of Columbia University—also looked at crime rates during those times.

They found no significant change in crime rates despite the dip in injuries. They also noted that the largest drops in firearm-related injuries during NRA conventions were in men, the southern and western areas of the country, and in states with the highest levels of gun ownership.

Though the analysis can only provide a correlation—not causation—Jena and Olenski suggest it may refute a common argument among gun proponents. That is, that gun accidents happen primarily in the hands of inexperienced users and that practice and training—promoted by the NRA—can greatly reduce or eliminate safety concerns and accidents, which affect thousands each year.

They may have cases.

UCLA professor Eugene Volokh:
Quote:
Doesn’t Dick Sporting Goods have a legal department? I’d think a company with stores nationwide would realize that age discrimination might be illegal in some states, would quickly review what those states might be, and would then simply set up a policy that excludes them.
True, the companies are presumably trying to make a public statement with their no-gun-sales-to-under-21-year-olds policy; but that statement shouldn’t be much diluted by an exception for some states when the explanation for the exception is that they have to comply with the law. And now the news is shifting to “Dick’s Sporting Goods being sued for illegal discrimination” instead of “Dick’s Sporting Goods is taking a stand to try to prevent gun crime,” which was presumably Dick’s goal.

They also may not have. Or has the right changed it's mind about the bakers who did not want to make cakes for gay couples?

Stores have all sorts of policies that are stricter than local laws. As long as they are MORE restrictive that the law allows usually there is not a problem. With the cakes it was more of an issue that they were bringing religion into it to try to allow discrimination but if they had been smart (like posting the restriction) they could have gotten away with it.

BTW, those age discrimination laws? Typically the law EXPLICITLY says it is only valid for 50+ or some other age well past majority. A lawyer (if the prof is one) would probably know that, even if there is not one in their state.

And yet age discrimination occurs at all ages. It really started hitting me when I reached 40! Fucking 40! And now that I am 58 it's even worse. The real problem is being able to prove age discrimination. It is extremely difficult to prove because of the way the laws are written.

Eugene Volokh certainly is a lawyer, and a very highly-regarded law blogger.

He's also sufficiently familiar with the relevant legislation in Oregon (one of the states where there's an action against both Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmarts) to quote the relevant local legislation on age discrimination and to argue that none of the statutory exemptions (sale of alcohol or marijuana, and discounts for over-50s) appear to apply in this case.

He also admits he isn't familiar with the law in Michigan, another state where a similar action has been brought, but questions -- given the Oregon example -- whether Dick's Sporting Goods bothered to check what the law was in either state.

Thanks, I did not recognize the name. Age is a protected category here too, but I seem to remember that it has a minimum age well past adulthood.

I think they are "moonies" - part of the Unification Church started by Sun Myung Moon. I had a cousin who decided to become a member back in the late 70's. She ran away from home and joined them. Her parents tried to get her back but she just disappeared. It was horrible and even though I lost touch with them after my Mom died, to my knowledge, no one has ever heard from my cousin again after she went to Brazil with them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unification_Church

edited to say that it's been my experience that they are a crazy bunch of Fug Buckers ....
