Things that give you hope

I think this project is the right direction to help reverse some of the damage done in the world by learning to live with nature, instead of against it, where everyone has a garden.

When someone can actually drive that car around Mars, then I'll get excited about it.

By the time that happens, all earth's cars will be self-driving anyway.

Which means then I can have a car. I can't drive.

I keep thinking this but considering we have folks going around claiming the Earth is Flat, I am now pretty sure self driving cars will never take off because too many of us are stuck in the past.

Now the thread for hope is a downer.... :/ Sorry.

I suspect that the automotive death-toll won't completely disappear until *all* cars are self-driving, and can talk to each other in logic instead of competing, getting distracted and displaying road-rage, like humans do.

If you mean the rovers, not quite. Humans are still needed to guide them.

Today the thing that gave me hope was the words of surviving kids from that school.

I saw several on Twitter slapping down Trump, republican NRA donation receivers and Fox news hosts as they came out with their tired "Now is not the times... " and "Let's not politicise this tradgedy..." and "thoughts and prayers" to tell them no, now is exactly the time and what the hell are you going to do to stop this?

Science fiction author William Gibson said "The future is already here, it's just not very evenly distributed". It has always been so. When our first hominid ancestor who learned to tame fire did so, they were the future. But it took time to spread. And some of those hominids never caught on. They're extinct now.

Don't worry about the throwbacks who think the Earth is flat, or that burning coal is still a good idea. They will also become extinct. The rest of us will move forward.

They're as much self-driving as radio-controlled toy cars are. JPL has full-time people dedicated to planning where they will go tomorrow, then radioing the instructions to Mars. Curiosity only averages about 10 meters a day. Part of that is because the ping time from Earth really sucks.

What we need, is to run some fiber cables from Mars to Earth.

We use laser communications in space, just not in fibers. Signals in fibers travel at 2/3 the speed of light, while light in open space travels *at* the speed of light. Why go slower? On Earth we do it because we often don't have "line of sight", either because of stuff in the way, or bad weather. None of that happens in space.

What about when Mars is on the other side of the sun? We can't use lasers then.

I'm sure the occasional occurrence of this has been planned for.
