And the sun wouldn't melt a super long fiber cable?

World's first 'forest city' covered in millions of plants to be built | Metro News

China is known for using large-scale construction projects just like this to artificially inflate its own economy.

There already are entire ghost cities with room for millions that are barely inhabited by a few thousand people.

Empty apartment blocks, vacant shopping malls, desolate parks and public squares.

When you scratch off the thin veneer of plant life, that "forest city" is just another purposeless concrete mountain and stillbirth of bad urban planning.

Today we just wait out "oppositions" (when Mars is on the opposite side of the Sun). If we need a full-time link, we can place a relay satellite someplace like Earth-Sun L4 or L5. Those are stable points 60 degrees ahead or behind the Earth.

There's a solution for that. You place two satellites in the same orbit as mars at equidistant point to act as relays when mars is hidden by the sun.

Yeah, far more efficient than my placing them in the same points in Mars orbit.

I'm certain that once self-driving cars become common, it won't take too long before statistics start coming out about how human drivers are causing all the accidents and people will start giving you the side eye if you insist on driving yourself. Just being a human driver will be the new drunk/distracted driving.

...BUT, that tiny amount of accidents caused by the cars malfunctioning will be put on a false equivalence by some people.

So what happens when these driverless cars become old and beat-up, and their drivers say to themselves "I really gotta replace this part but rent is due and where am I going to find $1200?"

You probably won't own an autonomous vehicle. You'll call for it when you need it from Uber or Lyft, or if you demand a dedicated one you'll lease it. If it breaks it'll call for a tow back to the leasing company itself. Whether you or they pay for the repair depends on the contract.

Wifi acts at radio frequencies, cable copper works with the electrical resistance of the cable. Fiber optics work with lasers and is much closer to "the speed of light."

There is still loss in the fiber to the glass and the cladding and reflection, so a line of site laser in space would be the fastest, but its got to be pretty precise with some quickly moving objects.

And expanding on this. Not owning the car will eliminate a lot of the "make cars pretty" aspect, so there will be a lot more standardized parts, especially under the body. And electric vehicles will also lead to cars that need a ton less maitenence.

Both of these angles are part of the ripple effect that will pass through the economy as the car industry turns to electric and self driving cars.

And this just makes it harder on the bottom 2 quintiles. A guy can usually count on at least a car when he's tapped out, looking for work, having bought a "reasonable" junker five years ago that needs work that can be put off so he can go the store and buy a pack of ham, cheese and bread to see him through the week while he looks for a job he can drive to.

But instead of only needing to buy gas, he'll be in a $199/month perpetual lease he can no longer afford to carry or maintain to lease standards. Bottom falls out.

Same here, I can live in a metropolitan area just fine sans car but some people make plans out in the middle of nowhere just assuming everyone can drive there.

Exactly, we are quickly moving to a reduced need to be somewhere else (telecommuting and the like). With both that and the efficiencies of driverless cars you will need less roads so you get walkable areas again. Just look at the advances we already have in cities from a few decades ago.

The problem is, in the long run, Self Driving cars work best if there are zero human cars.

It will probably be like the transition between cars and walking/horses/etc. All those modes still exist, one is just faster than the others.

Yeah, but those things still get special zones and lanes. You don't really walk down the interstate unless you need to.

Human cars will love on as an enthusiast thing, but the problem comes for John Smith trying to manual drive his car to work each day.

Half the car mechanics will be replaced because electric cars don't have those parts at all. The other half will be replaced because the cars were designed to be assembled by robots. That means they can also be maintained by robots. Just run the assembly program backwards to remove a part, then forwards to install the replacement.

You want hope? Even in this mess that our leaders can't figure out how to solve [or refuse to, more like], we've kids that have it figured out; that understand what being in a society -means-.

It'll probably make you cry, I know I am, but still....

That's something they should consider good point, seems to be a huge amount of wasted resources to keep repeating over and over.
