They did once, in 1900. Not a huge success, it seems. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cricke...ummer_Olympics

I've been under the impression that a major international cricket tournament would take the entire four years of the Olympiad.

The maximum length now is 5 days. This duration was set as a result of the 'Timeless Test' match in South Africa in 1939, which went on for 12 days and resulted in a draw when the England team had to leave to catch their ship home. See https://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...less-test-1939

If you are counting the time length of a sport in days you are doing something wrong.

edit: I read the article but maybe it is because I do not know the rules that I am lost? Most days one team was up by several hundred points over the other so why did it continue? Most games I know of have some fixed end point: a fixed time (with or without timeouts), a number of innings/periods/whatever (with set rules as to when it ends) or just when one team reaches a certain score first. Does cricket not have some relatively simple winning condition?

What kind of nonsense is this? Nothing about cricket is relatively simple, I think that's the whole point of it. A sport that stops for lunch and tea can only be good, if odd.

Because a cricket match runs for a given number of innings, and an innings isn't over until the batting side is caught out.

Or to be precise:

Quote:
Law 13: Innings. Before the game, the teams agree whether it is to be one or two innings for each side, and whether either or both innings are to be limited by time or by overs. In practice, these decisions are likely to be laid down by Competition Regulations, rather than pre-game agreement. In two-innings games, the sides bat alternately unless the follow-on (Law 14) is enforced. An innings is closed once all batsmen are dismissed, no further batsmen are fit to play, the innings is declared or forfeited by the batting captain, or any agreed time or over limit is reached. The captain winning the toss of a coin decides whether to bat or to bowl first.

Law 14: The follow-on. In a two innings match, if the side batting second scores substantially fewer runs than the side which batted first, then the side that batted first can require their opponents to bat again immediately. The side that enforced the follow-on has the chance to win without batting again. For a game of five or more days, the side batting first must be at least 200 runs ahead to enforce the follow-on; for a three- or four-day game, 150 runs; for a two-day game, 100 runs; for a one-day game, 75 runs. The length of the game is determined by the number of scheduled days play left when the game actually begins.

Law 15: Declaration and forfeiture. The batting captain can declare an innings closed at any time when the ball is dead. He may also forfeit his innings before it has started.

Law 16: The result. The side which scores the most runs wins the match. If both sides score the same number of runs, the match is tied. However, the match may run out of time before the innings have all been completed. In this case, the match is drawn.

While I find American Football completely incomprehensible.

I don't know why it is, but -- and I'm pretty sure Argent and others will back me up on this -- if you were brought up in a cricket-playing country, then the game is reasonably easy to follow, even if you're not particularly interested in it. Osmosis, maybe.

The top-level games -- played over three or five days -- are very strategic and fascinating to follow if you understand what the team captains are doing. Otherwise I can see it's not much fun.

However, learning about the game by attending county and international games with knowledgeable friends and a special match picnic hamper is a pleasant way of spending a summer afternoon.

American football (gridiron) is two battering rams starting in the middle of the field trying to beat each other back over the goal line. That's all you need to know.

American football started making sense for me when I realised it's basically a rugby variant with legalised shepherding and longer breaks between tackles. It's still incredibly uninteresting, but I can now at least mostly grok what's happening.

Oh, I do not consider american fooseball comprehensible by any stretch of the imagination. At least it has reasonably finite winning conditions (even though it constantly runs into overtime and messes up my Sunday night tv schedule).

Being able to come up with a name that offends the most number of people seems to have something to do with the winning conditions given how loathe they are to change them.

Snow is reasonable for doing activities on. Going cross-country skiing is a great workout. Ice is just a hazard between you and the post-sauna swim though.

A lot of Finnish kids (and some Finnish-American ones) get strapped to either ice skates or cross country skiis before they can walk. One guess which of the two groups I was in.
