Never been a big fan personally but of the music I listened to by them, I'm somewhat stunned by their reputation for "good music" especially because it seems like no one in the band can play a damn instrument without a rack of about 30 fucking pedal effects.

As someone who has every single album that U2 has released (and some that they haven't) and as someone who has traveled around the country to see them numerous times live I just want to pop in and say I disagree with almost all the content of this thread...except for the obvious fact that Bono's massive ego continually compels him to say stupid things. Also, some not so stupid things:

Quote:
'Whenever you see the feminine spirit move from the circumference to the centre, there’s usually a jump in consciousness.’
(Bono)

Two little things worth mentioning:

As a group, the band put women in leadership and managerial positions long before it was common to do so, and they have kept them there.

Quote:
They’ve had the same tour manager, Dennis Sheehan, for more than 20 years and an organization (staffed mostly by women) known for efficiency and good manners in a nasty, nasty business. And except for a brief period of time when Adam Clayton was engaged to model Naomi Campbell, they have never been fodder for the tabloids. U2, the only mega-band that still makes both commercially successful and vital music, avoided rock-star cliché from the get-go.
Also, very few all male rock acts have done as much to promote women's issues and to celebrate women as much as U2, including during the summer tour which will be the highest grossing tour of the 2017.

'HERSTORY'

Quote:
“Bono had the idea to give ‘Act III’ of the show a loose theme of being an ode to women,” said Willie Williams, U2’s longtime creative director. “He’d observed that at various times in human history, a more feminine spirit has taken the lead; the Renaissance and ‘60s counterculture being examples.

“The thought was that we are currently living in a time when we could really use a more feminine spirit in our leadership and a way to illustrate this might be to celebrate some of the great female pioneers of the past,” Williams said.

Enter Alice Wroe and Herstory, a participatory project that combines feminist art, education, and activism to engage people of all genders in celebrating women’s history—particularly women who have been left out (systematically or otherwise) of the traditional, historical canon.

“I’ve been researching these women for about four years and I’ve got hundreds of them. I have a little weep in the morning when I read about them and they literally feed me and make me stronger,” said Wroe, 26, by phone from Russia where she was running a series of Herstory workshops for street children earlier this month. “When I got the opportunity to show these women - my personal heroes - to the number of people who go to a U2 show each night, it blew my mind. I realized together we could genuinely rupture the canon that is so damaging to all of us, that just swells with white, CIS-gender men. And if we can promote these women’s lives on the stage and allow them to be the role models that they fully deserve to be, we really could change hugely how we relate to ourselves as women, how we relate to each other.”
One of the things I have always loved about the band is that at their shows and in their lyrics, I have never felt I was any less than an equal among them. Bono used a poor choice of words to describe something that is real and I am sure the worst criticism he will receive for it will come from Ali, his wife of 40 years, and his two daughters.

The Pope vs. Bono joke was spot on, but no one would laugh at it more than Bono himself.

Just my two cents. Let the flagellation continue...

There aren't enough effects pedals in the universe to save their bass player, but I've always rather liked their guitarist's "effects on top of effects" stuff, and he has come up with a few boss licks. Vertigo, for one.
Streets Have No Name is a doozy, too. It's just that you get these ripping guitar intros then, unfortunately, the rest of the band starts playing and .....

Veri is right when it comes to many people but not everyone. There were few disco songs I liked and I haven't blocked any of the vast majority of disco I can't stand to listen to.

If you block shit out how the hell can you remember what it is you don't like so you don't listen to it.

I only liked U2 when they first came out. They have sucked for the past 3 decades.
Bono should stick to playing on his yacht and leave the rock for real musicians.

Good point.

Usually, I don't remember crappy songs until I either hear one being played (and, unless I can change the station, I usually tune it out in my head), or as I'm sifting through a rack of albums, see songs I don't like, and go, oh, nevermind, and put the record/CD back. Other than that, I really don't spend any time thinking about them.

I actually disagree - they got an album deal being kind of bubblegum [only if you squint] but they originally were the bad boys the Stones pretended to be - ie, the suits and stuff were an act.

But Ringo was and is a completely doll of a guy; never heard anything bad about him.

-----------
I love U2's music up through Unforgettable Fire, especially that ethereal guitar work. I never thought their music got -bad-, but it just wasn't nearly as good, and not worth getting.

But then, it takes more than being a git to make me not listen to someone, and if they are in a band, I'm more likely to cut slack - which is why I still listen to the Smiths, even though Morrisey is a git. Or to Amboy Dukes, even though Nugent is an ass.

You know, Bono comment is extra silly when you realize he himself was named one of Glamour Magazine's 2017 Women of the Year.

Bono wins one of Glamour's 'Women of the Year' awards

That is pretty "girly" Bono.

I hated disco in general but there are a few things I like. Most things from abba for example. Although looking at my itunes list I am reminded of some other good stuff from that decade, like ELO and what would properly be 80s rock.

Then again, I am partial to pretty much any song that has multiple voices in it, especially if they overlap saying different things. Then I probably weird people out by singing along with every voice all at the same time (a combo of things like knowing multiple accents and being able to play chess against myself with no idea of which side will win).
