That this is even being argued about is Utterly Absurd.

Edit: I am quite fine with this as totp.

I'm thinking about signing it. As it is I'm beginning to this this freedom of the press bullshit has gone too far and they should be forced to report the news, as it is, without their idiotic spin or hammering it into the ground. (That includes all the cable news networks)

When your competition's viewership is increasing 4-fold in comparison to yours (out of a not-infinite pool), the trend is absolutely that way. But if you prefer the more technically accurate "losing ground" then you are welcome to that by all means

Interestingly, whither Fox is in the news today

Fox News Finds Its Rivals Closing In

Quote:
More than bragging rights among the cable-news channels are at stake. Brad Adgate, senior vice president of research at Horizon Media, an ad buyer, said he recently crunched the prime-time Nielsen data for the first half of the year on his own and came away with reservations about Fox’s performance.

“I think that there is some concern there,” Mr. Adgate said. “While they’re still the top-rated network, the gap has closed.”

He added, “What strategy are they going to embark on to rebuild the momentum they had in 2004?”

Still, no one is ready to count out Mr. Ailes, or Fox News.

“The proof is going to be once the political season is over,” Mr. Adgate said. “Can CNN sustain the momentum they have?”

Or, to put it in political terms, he added, “Is this going to have coattails?”

I'll definitely be watching Fox News on election night. It'll be delicious to see as it all crumbles around them . Especially if Rove (mr. "Permanent Republican Majority") is on the desk.

BTW Do people think this is a good thing? I applaud the US about this. Imagine if a German had control of the media of Britain in the 1930s. (Did I Godwin this thread?)

Please, by all means, back that up - what "idiotic blather" of theirs rises to the level of a news joking about killing a presidential candidate or labelling a gesture "a terrorist fist jab", for example?

I think it is a good thing, though I do wish there were additional limits on how much a company can own. With all of these megacorporations owing huge swaths of the media, it makes unbiased coverage harder and harder to find, and the line between news and press releases blur even further.

Scariest Forum Thread Ever
i no longer watch the (um, mainstream?) news, no matter what the channel. i get my weather reports online, which tend to be far more accurate. i get a lot of my news here on this board.

the only other channel i rely on for current events is this:

news // current

i don't know how many of you have access to this channel, but all of it is completely user created. (even most of the commercials.) you can post videos comments on the stories, some of which end up being broadcast.

it's a really cool deal. puts the news back into the hands of the people. (i like it, anyway. ) covers a whole range of thoughts on any number of topics.

Keep feeding the meme, Cris. In all those videos I don't see ONE SINGLE actual newscast in that entire litany of stuff you linked. I see O'Reilly (opinion). I see Hannity (idiot opinion). I see E.D. Hill's "Fox and Friends" circus, which is not ostensibly a news broadcast but editorial commentary on the news. The "killing Obama" comment was made by a guest, NOT by Shepherd the Fox interviewer. I see opinion panels and guest opinion-givers. Where's the news casts? I don't see one!

Here's where the myth starts: That all of those excerpted little snippets, pounced on by a couple of liberal attack groups, represent all that is Fox and warrant this sort of ridiculous shit storm.

Fox has a right to their opinion just like MoveOn and Fox Attacks. The people confusing their opinion with NEWS are the radicals, not Fox.

I think what we have here is the same level of rhetoric from the Left that we saw from the Right during the last two elections with all the Michael Moore baloney - anything that doesn't pander to the golden boy of choice is "outrageous and objectionable". It doesn't serve any purpose other than to get a bunch of people pissed off for nothing. But that's what MoveOn is best at doing.

Wake me up when MoveOn starts to represent a single thing that's important to the middleclass American mainstream. Maybe then they'll matter.

Not all of us are willing to be spoon fed liberal trash from every angle of the media these dayss. You -can't- criticize Obama without immediately being branded racists, which I most certainly am not. I dont believe in raising my taxes so people who refuse to work can have the sane standard of living as those of us who do. Its called socialism, and lkast time I looked at the history books it was rather frowned on by the American public. Fox has a lot of commentary type shows, but they also have some good debates, and trust me..none of their stuff is any more inflammatory than what you hear on the big 3 (nBC< CBS< ABC) any more. People who live in glass houses should be careful throwing stones

Let me guess. You don't comprehend well.

The clips did NOT portray Fox newscasts. They were EDITORIAL OPINION, and some weren't even Fox analysts. They were guests.

Get back to me when you also start criticizing the bullshit that passes for "opinion" from Chris Matthews, Al Franken, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Ken Olberman and Michael Moore. I don't see much of that around here, so I think I know where you can stick your opinion.

Either racist of cynically apealling to a voter's racist subconscious (and let's face it, we all have one in varying degrees) for political gain. Frank Rich had good take on that in this week's column.

Quote:
Mr. Rove has been busy lately developing a new fear card for 2008 — fear of the Obamas.

Its racial undertones are naked enough. Earlier this year, Mr. Rove wrote that Mr. Obama was “often lazy,” and that his “trash talking” during a debate was “an unattractive carry-over from his days playing pickup basketball at Harvard.” Last week Mr. Rove caricatured him as the elitist “guy at the country club with the beautiful date.” Provocative as it is to inject Mr. Obama into a setting historically associated with white Republicans, the invocation of that “beautiful date” is even more so. Where’s his beautiful wife? Mr. Rove’s suggestion that Mr. Obama might be a sexual freelancer, as an astute post at the Web site Talking Points Memo noted, could conjure up for a certain audience the image of “a white woman on his arm.”
And where's Karl working these days? Oh! Fox News... funny how that name keeps coming back.

Brit Hume? He's the top NEWS guy at Fox, no? When is he going to issue a retraction and (hopefully apology) for broadcasting this lie? Fox is just sad... they won't stop until they can convince 100% of it's viewers that Obama is ... wait for it ... <scary music> a... MUSLIM!
