Guys, seriously, I can't tell you how happy I am. This has nothing to do with Senate politics but everything to do with Alabama.

As close to your state as I live, -I'm- really happy too.

And I bet the woman who lives next door, who is practically family [she's known my spouse his whole life], and whom is from Alabama, is ecstatic. One, the couch of her team got votes, and Two, she's about as progressive as they come - probably because she worked in computers for the military back in her younger days, and has always been a pantsuit person [she's also in her mid 80s].

With 99% reporting, CNN says Jones won 49.5 to 48.8. That's a good thing I suppose, as it puts Jones over the .5% margin that triggers an automatic vote recount in Alabama - although maybe that's not as important as it could've been, considering that Alabama's secstate deliberately interfered with recount process integrity yesterday, anticipating a narrow Moore win that Democrats would try to challenge with a recount. Whoops.

Of course there's nothing stopping Moore's party from requesting a recount anyway, but I suspect it wouldn't lead to anything.

ETA: and the margin is still growing. Now 49.9 to 48.4.

Congratulations, everyone. An early Christmas present!

Here, courtesy of GQ, is a lovely video of one of Moore's spokesthings explaining to an increasingly bemused interviewer how Muslims can't be members of Congress because the law requires them to swear on the Bible. He knows this because, as an elected official, he's sworn on the Bible three times. The interviewer breaks it to him that this was because the law says you can swear on whatever book you choose, or nothing if you prefer.

The expression on the man's face as the truth sinks in, and realises he's made a complete fool of himself on national television, is a wonder to behold.

Oh yeah, those awful, barely legal write-in votes. "A win is a win" is something you'd say after killing off all the other contestants to prove things are fair and square.

Big story of tomorrow: the RNC and Trump knowingly went all-in on an accused pedo and failed. Trump won't care, he'll just blame other people as usual; but some of the GOP were highly conflicted, and they should not be allowed to live down the decision they ultimately made.

It's nice to know that, even in Alabama, a Trump endorsement doesn't carry a lot of weight.

Trump campaigned for Moore, and the state went 30 points lower for the Republican candidate than Trump's win last year. I think it is partly a referendum on the Republican Party as a whole, Trump included. It happened in Virginia in November too, when Democrats picked up 15 seats out of 100 in their House of Delegates.

Moore won't concede. If the final vote is within .5 percent there is an automatic recount. That seems very unlikely unless there is a substantial military vote. Those are uncounted but I'd be surprised if there were enough of those to make a difference.
