Parramatta's changed a lot since then. Growing up on the lower north shore during the 70s/80s, Parra was the boondocks. These days it's next major hub west of the CBD. Trust me on this, in Sydney in 2017, for Parramatta to have a 15-20% lower "yes" vote than Penrith or Campbelltown, that is a shock.

The Senate just voted 43-12 in favor. ^_^ Now it's over to the House of Representatives, on Monday.

Gay Australian lawmaker proposes to partner during floor debate on gay marriage | TheHill

Quote:
A gay Australian lawmaker proposed to his partner during a debate in Australia's House of Representatives over same-sex marriage.

Tim Wilson, an openly gay member of Parliament, during a speech on the floor, thanked his partner, Ryan Bolger.

"You have had to tolerate more than most because you had to put up with me. ... This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship," he said during the speech, according to a video from a BuzzFeed reporter.

He said both of them know this issue isn't the reason they got involved in politics.

"But in my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands," he said.

“So there’s only one thing left to do,” Wilson said.

The final voting is now underway, for the amendments proposed. ^_^

LNP MP George Christensen says people are "cheering for the erosion of religious liberty".

There is applause from the public gallery.

Mr Christensen's voice rises an octave or two.

"The erosion," he repeats.

Independent Bob Katter takes over.

"I refuse to use the word g-a-y," he says.

The gallery laughs again.

"Mr Speaker, will you shut them up please?" Mr Katter says.

C’est un fait accompli. ^_^

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is speaking: "What a day! What a day for love, for quality, for respect! Australia has done it."

"The Parliament has got on with it and we have voted today for a equality, for love, it is time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect, and we
respect every Australian who was voted, those who voted yes, and those who voted no, this belongs to us all, this is Australia!"

"Let's do it, let's finalise the deal right now!"
Quote:
The final vote is being held.

Only two MPs are voting against the legislation - Bob Katter and Liberal MP Russell Broadbent.

Because there are less than five MPs voting no the legislation is declared passed.
