Facebook," Help us stop Revenge Pron by Uploading your Nudes"

Facebook wants victims of revenge porn to upload nude photos to prevent more abuse.
Quote:
Now Facebook wants to make it harder for men to post nude photos of women without their consent—a practice often referred to as revenge porn, since the men often who do this are ex-partners attempting to damage a woman’s reputation or to impress their peers.

Facebook’s latest answer is to ask women to upload naked pictures of themselves to Facebook via Messenger. Facebook’s artificial intelligence software would then read the image and assign it a secret code, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported last week.
What could go wrong...?

This is such a typical tech nerd approach to the problem; over reliance on technology over humanity, dependent on perfectly spherical people and utterly tone deaf.

I'm pretty close to spherical, but I don't even like mirrors so I get where you are coming from on this.

So facebook is clearly trying to go down the whole image fingerprint path but, yeah, they don't have the best reputation on their 'AI'. As per the mistranslation issues that got people arrested and their conclusion that an artists image of a robin on a greeting card was some kind of adult image.

I'll lay odds that if you upload your nudes they a) wont be deleted the moment the relevant data is captured from it as they should be and b) they will decline to accept it because it violates community standards. You'll only be allowed to upload nudes that don't show any body parts.

Yes, even setting aside the creepiness factor you will probably have a rash of nudes posted to people's walls.

Meanwhile anyone uploading them for revenge purposes will quickly learn to use a filter or something in PS. That is if a simple crop will not get around the algorithm.

Deactivated my Facebook account. I wasn't using it anyway, and was getting sick of emails about someone trying to log in and failing, but this is just ridonkulous.

There are no nude photos of me. Never have been. I'm crazy, not stupid.

Facebook can go fuck itself. Even if there were any nudes of me, I've got better sense than to post them on the net unlike the teenagers/20 somethings out there who haven't learned to keep that stuff to themselves yet.

You know, aside from how easy this would be to circumvent using a filter or probably even a crop to screw with the hash, what are the odds you even have all of the nudes of you your ex has?

It's modern day, so they are probably phone pics.

I mean if they are the type of person who would share them online, chances are they were taking more than one photo to start with, and who knows if they shared them with you. Not to mention this does nothing if they were capturing your Snapchat or whatever that you may not even have copies of.

It can't just be generic nudes because bodies change and bodies are similar, no level of AI analysis will perfectly be able to ID a random person based solely on their body from a random photo.

Sending in our nude photos to fight revenge porn? No thanks, Facebook

I called an academic researcher working at a revenge porn centre to ask what they thought of the plan. The researcher I spoke to wished to remain anonymous, only because she wanted to be quoted as saying it was “a fucking terrible idea”.

In fairness, I doubt they were actually trying to stop Russian advertising before they got called out on it...

That said, everything I know about machine learning suggests that the technology to do this doesn't exist yet. We can barely recognize faces MOST of the time.

I think they'd need to train the technology with not 1 or 2, but hundreds of photos of you to teach it to recognize that it is you with any real accuracy. So yes, this request is very fishy and reeks of ulterior motives. I don't doubt they put more effort into this technology than the other stuff you mentioned if you catch my drift...

Sight cropping would work. A filter applied might also. Then there's the proven to work tactic used often on youtube, flip the image. Makes all the writing backwards but I've yet to hear of youtube's system catching it.

I think they're in earnest, just completely fucking stupid as well. From what I've read they're not training machines to identify people from one photo to the next, rather their intention is catalogue and collate specific images in such a way that if anyone else tries to upload them the attempt will be blocked. To quote from the column I linked above:

Quote:
Individuals are encouraged to pre-emptively record the existence of the images on a form with the commission’s website, then send copies of the snaps to themselves on messenger. Once notified by the commissioner’s office, a “community operations analyst” from Facebook will access your personal messenger files and “hash” images to prevent them being uploaded or shared. They will keep the images for “a short time”, shared on a database with Twitter and Google, so no one except the world’s largest online media corporations and the governments of entire countries will possess a record of your most intimate betrayal.

Okay, so then here's what Facebook could do that would actually produce some worthwhile results, assuming they are just working off fingerprints (hashes) of the photos.

Rather than ask everyone to upload their photos to Facebook, an idea breathtaking in its stupidity, why not release an app that can fingerprint the photos in the privacy of your own computer/phone and then upload only the fingerprint?

A screen grab of an image, with absolutely no further manipulation would be enough. I wouldn't be surprised if saving to a second device and renaming, would work too. Anything that changes the metadata should be enough to defeat the system outlined.
