Puerto Rico is dying

Hurricane Maria: Puerto Rico facing crisis
Quote:
Puerto Rico is facing a growing crisis in the wake of Hurricane Maria, which has knocked out water, electricity, and telephone services.

The entire population is still without power and engineers say it could take months to be restored. A dam remains in danger of collapsing.

Shipments of food, water and generators are starting to arrive at the main port in San Juan, which has reopened.

At least 13 people have died since Maria ripped through Puerto Rico.
Hurricane Maria was a cancer attack on an already suffering people.

Puerto Rico’s Economy Was a Mess Before Hurricane Maria. It Will Only Make Recovery Harder
Quote:
Puerto Rico is only just beginning to grapple with the fallout from Hurricane Maria, the strongest storm the island has faced in nearly a century. Looming over those recovery efforts is a vital question: Who will foot the bill for the estimated $10 billion in damages?

The answer would be complicated enough for a financially healthy Puerto Rico. But the island’s economy was in shambles well before Hurricane Maria ever formed. Puerto Rico declared a form of bankruptcy in May, facing a crushing multi-billion dollar debt load following years of financial mismanagement. For the last decade, the government hasn’t had the funds to repay its creditors or improve its aging infrastructure, let alone deal with the ramifications of a major hurricane.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was an exodus to the states.

It would be in addition to what's already been happening there for a while.

While I feel sympathy for the people of Puerto Rico, I have to smile a bit at the fact that these are brown people Trump can't stop from moving to the States, since they are US citizens.

I have several friends who have settled there and they are considering doing exactly that.

Every new thing I read about what's going on down there makes me more and more despondent.

Much of Puerto Rico Can't Even Call for Help

Quote:
Hurricane Maria left Puerto Rico absolutely devastated. We’re talking flattened houses, lost lives, shattered power grids, flooded towns, forests destroyed—devastated. On top of all that, cellphone service, one of the island’s most important lines of communication, has been almost entirely cut. So many are now struggling just to tell their families they’re okay.

The scene sounds desperate. According to multiple reports, there’s virtually zero cellphone service outside of San Juan, the capital. Even there, only 25 percent of cellphone towers survived the storm. In an attempt to find a signal, people are driving for hours around the island, a risky endeavor since Puerto Rico is also facing gas shortages. Still, the highways are lined with cars as people park and wander around looking for just one or two bars. Wired internet and phone service is also spotty, since the Category 4 storm decimated utility poles and other aspects of infrastructure. A major underwater cable was also damaged.

You're not the only one who suggests that. The governor agrees.

It's a complete mess. How the hell can any society accustomed to relatively reliable water systems and electricity, go for MONTHS without them? We've got a huge military, put them to good use. QUICKLY!

It is kind of sad that you can replace 'Puerto Rico' with 'Trump Hotel & Casino' (or several other trump business endeavors) and the tweet still makes perfect sense...

Quote:
Texas & Florida are doing great but Trump Hotel & Casino, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble...it's old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the facility was destroyed, with billions of dollars owed to Wall Street and the banks, which sadly must be dealt with.
Obviously followed by the obligatory new article about filing for bankruptcy and 1.8 billion dollars of debt.

US won't waive shipping restrictions for Puerto Rico relief | TheHill

Quote:
The Trump administration on Tuesday denied a request from several members of Congress to waive shipping restrictions to help get gasoline and other supplies to Puerto Rico as the island recovers from Hurricane Maria.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined the request to waive the Jones Act, which limits shipping between coasts to U.S.-flagged vessels, according to Reuters. DHS waived the act following hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which hit the mainland U.S.

The agency has in the past waived the rule to allow cheaper and more readily-available foreign vessels to supply goods to devastated areas. But DHS said Tuesday that waiving the act for Puerto Rico would not help the U.S. island territory due to damaged ports preventing ships from docking.

“The limitation is going to be port capacity to offload and transit, not vessel availability,” a spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection told Reuters.

edit: They are NOT there? WTF are you even thinking Donnie as this is what they are designed to do and those icebreakers will be in full use soon if you do nothing.
