Hurricane Irma check-in and help thread

If you or a loved one are in the path, let us know, and report in again afterwards if possible.

If you need a place to stay, or for your pet to stay, or can offer same - let us know. Some of us have room.

If you need help in any way - gas money, food, anything - even yucky woman things or socks and underwear - let us know. There's still time for paypal and (hopefully) care packages from Amazon.

I guess it's official now.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I'm in the Atlanta area, single "semi-retired" guy, 3 bedroom house, spare twin, fold-out queen, and small cot available, plus lots of sleeping bags and blankets from my days setting up camping for medieval re-enactments.

Elevation 1000 ft, and 300 miles inland, so even if the hurricane remnants go this way (and the current forecast shows it might), the energy will be mostly spent by the time it gets here.

Is there anyone around who can move this thread into SLU Community forum? There's more protection/privacy in that forum if people post personal details.

And speaking of hurricane check-in, where is Cris? I hope somewhere NOT in Miami?

Neph and Sig should be ok where they are, i spoke with her a couple of days ago and she was fine and prepared, Chandra might actually join them since she had to evacuate.

ETA: Also spoke with Sal on twitter and she was fully prepped for Irma and aparently safe.

Update: Chandra is safely at neph´s with a load of indian food.

Cris is OK. He didn't evacuate, but has what he needs to hunker down.

My family in Miami (Godmother, cousins, kids) is hunkering down, and those (aunt and other cousins ++) in and around Atlanta I'm pretty sure will be fine. Still, they are extremely worried about their homes, friends, etc... It's all too much.

Looking at the predictions of 10 foot storm surge and huge seas for the Florida Keys I hope that Roxanne and her friends who were thinking of riding it out, have changed their minds and evacuated.

Please stay safe everyone

Continuing to update the original pre-landfall watch list. I'll re-post it further upthread on Monday and Tuesday as people begin to check in.

This. So much. Been worried about Roxanne and Margo and their friends that were, last I heard, planning to ride it out. I know Roxanne and Margo had a place to go, but have they left it too late to get there? Are all their friends okay?

/me worries.

If anyone of limited means loses their computer in the hurricane, I can loan out my emergency netbook (Lenova S10-3) - it's an older one with Ubuntu and 2 GB of RAM. Very lightweight, portable, and rugged with a good battery life and case.

Gah, I have insane cousins. They live a block apart. In Naples. One evacuated with their family. The other is staying put. They've got their home all boarded up, tons of supplies >.< At least they had the sense to call and let me know they were going to ride it out even if that's not the best idea given this storm's size.

Jorus and I are in SC (midlands). We will probably get leftovers from the eastern part of Irma, if it stays on the predicted course. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, and rain.

ETA Had to correct hours to Jorus. Damn auto correct!

Does anybody have news on Brig McD? Now that the cone is expected to pass up the west coast of Florida I'm a bit worried about her. I was corresponding with her via email while living overseas during the summer and lost touch around July. I've sent a couple of emails since the 6th and have heard nothing. Normally she's very quick to respond so I'm hoping that's a sign she was in the process of moving some place safer.

Oops - I checked into the wrong thread ... Anyhow, just getting a few gusts and some light rain now. Expect it to pick up about 2:00 today and then to have Cat 1 & 2 force winds and some surge where I am at. I'm really worried for the people in the Keys and Tampa area.

I checked her last Facebook post and she appears to be prepping, so probably hasn't left the area.

Roxanne just posted on Facebook -- literally minutes ago -- that she, her wife and the dogs are in a high-rated shelter in the Keys.

Posting pics of my totally traumatized cats. They have been running about the house chasing all the lizards and frogs that rode in when I brought my potted plants into the living room. It's a literal jungle for them.

Hope they stay safe. I was confused because I kept seeing notes that there would be no shelters in the Keys, and the City of Key West website itself still says that there would be no shelter in a cat 3-5 situation (and that those that need to can go to a shelter in Miami).

Then saw that they had decided to open four shelters, but they would only be open while the winds are strong, won't get any services, and aren't recovery shelters.

So, again, I really hope they stay safe.

Quote:
But with Irma becoming a bigger threat to the Keys with its latest shift, county managers decided to open these buildings to provide a safe location to ride out the storm. Irma could make landfall somewhere in the Middle Keys early Sunday morning with potentially catastrophic winds, then continue toward the Southwest coast. These shelters will close again after the unsafe weather conditions have passed. They are not recovery shelters

So my work evacuated where I was supposed to be last night. Right now I'm at home moving my electronics to higher ground (and away from my windows) then taking one last sweet sweet shower and heading to another facility of ours further inland for the duration.

Stay safe everyone.

Sorry, I was using the informal meaning of the word shelter, not a specific government-run shelter. Per notes in another thread on the forum, Roxanne explained that she is staying in a friend's re-inforced house that has a high safety rating. Unfortunately, there's limit to what any structure can do to protect you from storm surge if it's below the water level. So fingers crossed that this isn't an issue for Rox and family.

I posted this in the other thread, but it looks like South Florida other than the Keys is going to be spared a direct hit - but unfortunately that means the Gulf Coast is going to get hit
