Given the changes in predictions, Brig McD (Tampa area) is heading farther inland to stay with family.

Tampa I would really be concerned about. It hasn't had a direct hit in almost a century, and like New Orleans, has a good bit of area that sits below sea level.

They could face the same level of catastrophic flooding.

Intellicast is predicting 40 mph sustained winds & 5.4 inches of rain for tomorrow. I have a lot of trees, so my main concern is one of them falling down due to wet soil, or losing a large branch. As a precaution, I plan to move my cars out to the street away from the trees. With all the trees, the roof is somewhat shielded from wind, so I don't expect damage to it unless something falls on it. We likely will lose power at some point, and I'll be offline in any case during thunderstorm/tornado conditions. The house itself is all brick and 60 years old, when they used real lumber to build with, so it is pretty sturdy, and I have a full basement to hide out in if needed.

I'm more concerned about you all, and my offer of a place to stay is still open if anyone needs it. Stay safe and good luck.

Where I am is taking in Floridians from other parts of the state in our shelters, as well as horses [at the fairgrounds] and the local shelters. We're still not in the TStorm zone even with Irma moving more westwardly last night. Hope everyone comes through this safely, spent some time last night worrying over people in the direct path and eastward.

My family is in the Miami area, btw. I'm sure if anything happens I will get a call. I was more worried about the tornadoes, you can't prepare for that.

We're far enough inland that it'll be substantially weakened by the time it gets here. The mountains will boost the wind a bit but it's not likely to get over 20-30 mph. The rain will be a problem for some but up here it's unlikely to be a big issue either.

They had been predicting it to remain a category 1 up into this area, but that's been revised and it will probably be little more than a collection of moderate rainstorms by then.

I suspect the worst we'll see is a maybe few downed trees over the county or a small rockfall along a highway somewhere.

Hurricane Irma Day 3 - looks like the worst of it has finally passed us and we had less damage than we did with Wilma. We, along with the rest of most of south Florida have no power. It was a wetter storm so more flooding and our entire dock is under water. We lost some trees but the house and cars are intact. I'm hoping for the best for my friends in Key West and my westerly neighbors.

I've been in contact on and off with my friend in Crestview. Last night she had some concern about tornadoes but that passed for now.

Her mom, dad and son all evacuated up to her house from the west coast. All of their homes are without power but hers is still on. To quote her, "Seriously, down here in the panhandle we are good. We caught up on GoT and are playing a lot of scrabble."

She said on Tuesday they will be able to suss out how bad the damage is to the houses her family left.

Damage wasn't too bad here. Some uprooted trees, but mostly palm fronds and other small debris. I am just grateful that the bricks on top of the building in the development across the street didn't become a bunch of projectiles. Power is no longer an issue.

“Prior to the start of the 2017 hurricane season American Red Cross disaster managers met with emergency managers in every county in Florida to reach agreements on how many evacuation centers the Red Cross would be expected to open in the event of a hurricane,” the charity said in a statement.

“In Miami-Dade the agreement was for the Red Cross to open eight of these centers. Schools to be used as shelters are pre-identified by the school system and county emergency management. When the need arises, county emergency managers in coordination with the school system pick specific shelter locations and ask the Red Cross to operate the centers. For Hurricane Irma the Red Cross was asked to open the eight evacuation centers we committed to open, and did so on Friday.”
Later in the article we learn the Red Cross actually came through with staffing for 12 shelters. So they over-delivered by 50%.

Just got off the phone with my cousin, they came through ok. Lost the enclosed patio roof, are without power and hunkered down in the tiny bathroom they have during the tornado warnings. They managed to cram 2 large dogs, 2 small dogs, and 5 adults in it. Only injury was a bump on the head from when the policeman's wife slipped on the floor. So whew, they got lucky seeing how Naples is beat to hell and back.

Glad the rest of SLUers are checking in and still alive <3

I'm OK here in Atlanta.

The worst of the wind and heavy rain seems to be over (7 pm Monday). Lost several sizable (2-3in diam) branches from the massive oak behind the house, and smaller branches, twigs, and leaves are everywhere (fall came early). Its still raining and getting dark, so I'll wait till tomorrow to check the roof and bring the cars back (I parked them on the street, away from all the trees).

Power was flickering during the worst of the wind, but never went out entirely. But it kept knocking out the computer, so I turned it off and went and read the paper. For some reason, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution left copies of the Sunday paper yesterday for everyone in the subdivision. That sucker is like $50 a month to subscribe! I only read the paper any more when someone leaves a copy behind at a restaurant.

Hope everyone else came through OK. I saw about a million people in GA were out of power, in addition to about half of Florida. There must be trees down everywhere.

Here, sorry, let me update you on my kiddo. She and her family are fine. Lots of wind and rain in the morning, but it seems that Wakulla wasn't hit so hard. They so however have a curfew in the area and some roads are blocked, so I told her to take it easy even though her job has been trying to call her in (yeah yeah, dat Florida logic, I know).

I hadn't posted about this until now, but I do have an aunt and cousin who live in Ft. Lauderdale, and an old Navy friend who lives near Jacksonville. Aunt and cousin have checked in - lots of tree damage in the area, but their houses survived pretty much unscathed. I haven't heard from my friend yet.

Edit: Friend is fine. He just had no power.

Wow, that was pretty intense, talk about shock and awe... mother nature, she's a beast! I think we had 85mph winds for about 4 hours, which were lower than expected, and not as much rain, either.Bradenton-Sarasota came through it really well thanks to the eye disorganizing and slowing her down to a low end cat 2 before it nailed us. Not so lucky in the Keys, Miami, Naples... There are a forest's worth of trees and limbs on the ground here, more than I've ever seen here but serious damage is sporadic here and there, we really dodged a bullet on this one, kids. Preparation paid off too. No power yet, half of FPL customers without it at the moment at 83 degrees at 11pm, but what a great breeze coming in. The neighborhood is quiet with no one having power, stars are bright too with minimal ambient light. We are grateful to still be here and really floored by the outpouring of support and concern from everyone. ❤❤❤

AND POWER JUST CAME BACK ON!!! it's really over!

Safe and dry here. Got to our shelter/building at 2pm saturday with a lot of hard work taking care of doubled up patients and families. We lost internet, Cable and cell coverage. The roof leaked a little bit there but we handled it. We did have power, hot food and AC.

Just got back home today. Apartment survived quite well, I have Internet, Cell coverage and power (I think because we're nearish to a major artery to I-75. There are a few shingles on the ground, but no leaks that I can see. Fort Myers seems to be shrugging it off and going about the business of getting everything back to normal.

I'm really lucky, as 81% off Lee county is without power and 92% of Collier county. Not to mention the loss of water for a long period (starting at roughly midnight Sunday/Monday.

I'm not hearing about any loss of life. SW Floridians even saved a beached dolphin, so all in all I'm pretty amazed and grateful.
