Hurricane Irma

As of 5am ET this morning, Hurricane Irma is still over open water. But max sustained winds of 150mph and climbing, and a barometric pressure of 937 millibars and falling, Irma is as of now the most powerful Atlantic hurricane of the season so far, and it's not even over the warmest water yet. It is currently category 4, but just a few mph short of the category 5 threshold which it could easily reach later today or even by the next update, which is at 8am ET.

This is one to take way seriously.

My worst fear is that this storm flattens Haiti, and the current US Psychopath President does nothing. Haiti cannot catch a break, and this could be devastating for Hispaniola.

The entire state of Florida is already under a state of emergency.

Hurricane Irma strengthens; Florida and Puerto Rico prepare

Quote:
Computer models show the system moving through the Caribbean, and by the end of week, it will turn right toward the north, said CNN meteorologist and weather anchor Tom Sater.

"There is a small window. If it turns sooner rather than later, we could maybe see the system slide by the East Coast into the ocean, but that window is shutting quickly," Sater said. "It definitely looks like we will be impacted by a major hurricane that is a Category 3, 4 or 5."

175mph sustained winds and 185mph gusts and it's just getting into warmer water.

The latest forecast for Irma is it will contract into an extremely rare stationary pinpoint position.

Yeahhh, this is gonna get ugly. I may be in AL but I'm not out of the woods, especially if Irma tracks more westward before turning north.

jumpy is a understatement... i'm already having flashbacks to andrew when i was 5... our home stood but it was pretty much a total lost and we weren't even ground zero. i remember going outside and seeing no landmarks or anything significant for miles. Got water and supplies over the weekend. watching it closely to decide if we go to a shelter or not. i don't want to go though it again. going north won't help as it will go right up the state..

homestead(ground zero) was wiped out before ... theres alot more people and housing there now most of them never experienced a storm of this magnitude before.

Take it as an opportunity to check your preparations. While it is still far off anyone near the east coast should do the same. I am up in DC but should go get some energy bars (I have a stock of water). If they mention anywhere north on a track projection stores will be mobbed as 'panic buying' will win out over the concept of 'calm stocking'.

I'm worried for my best friend.

I ordered him to stop by the store and pick up whatever he could, like candles, a flashlight and batteries, canned things, painkillers, bottled water, etc. He has a terrible time actually taking care of himself before others, so he needs to be told what to do at times like this or he'd go without.

180 sustained now. What a monster storm. Here's hoping something takes at least some of the wind out of it before it reaches those little islands.

My friend lives in Crestview which is pretty far inland but she is packing up the cats, picking up her parents (who dont want to leave of course) and leaving this evening to get out before the traffic gets bad. She says there's no way she hunkering down this time cuz the last one blew her roof clean off and it wasn't bad as Irma is being projected to be.

Should we do a check in thread?

Tropical Storm Jose has formed in the Atlantic, about halfway between the Cape Verdes and Hurricane Irma's current position - although somewhat further south:

Jose's forecast track is still fluid, but at this point there's a possibility that St Kitts and Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, which are soon to take a direct hit from category 5 Irma, could be hit again by another hurricane three days later.

Fuck me ... I have a friend in Thonotosassa who has been in and out of the hospital the last few months for varied reasons. Last I heard from her she was back in ... I bloody hope they relocate her to a much safer area.

I hope so too Spirits - they probably will as they have some time before this monster gets here and our governor has already declared a disaster. They start first with hospitals, hospices and nursing homes.

schools in miami and broward is closed thursday and friday.

government personal is not going to work on friday

shelters are being determined right now.

Stores are re-stocking water as fast as possible, some places limiting it to two cases to car.

i overheard somone at work mentioned they are calling for evacuation of zone A (anyone on the beach pretty much)

never seen a line at a pet store so long before.
