Don't forget: You can hit Office Depot, Staples, and other office supply stores for water.

I hate to think how much worse the storm will get. It hit cat 5 just as it entered warmer water, but it has a long way to go to hit any substantial land masses.

The hurricane is so strong it's registering on seismometers. Hurricane Irma is so strong it's registering on devices designed to detect earthquakes
Ugh.

You can see Jose, too.

Check out the disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico, though. That's Tropical Depression Thirteen, which was born this evening. It's expected to become a named storm tomorrow - but luckily for Texas, it will stay south and over Mexico. Hopefully not too unluckily for Mexico.

Barbuda has more or less taken a direct hit. Irma's eye is currently over the island. The entire island fits inside the eye.

Dreadfully worried for all of you. SLUt's for sure, but America as a whole.

No matter what happens and it won't be good, you all need to get together to get over this. Please don't forget that this will take time to get over. Much time and much help will be needed.

Take inspiration from shit like this because it all helps.

And people want to help. They just need a good idea and some direction.

Hang in there.

It's looking like it's going to curve north/northeast at Florida by the most recent forecasts. Which could mean a direct hit or even it curving so much it goes around it altogether and starts posing a threat to the Carolinas. What a strange trajectory.

Stay safe, everyone.

What's going on is Irma is going to eventually run into the cold front that will be over the East coast, north Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico Thurs night. Winds behind that front move south-east from western Canada. This is opposite the direction the storm is moving.

So depending on exactly when and where they collide, Irma will change direction, probably towards the north-east. Hurricanes generally curve east as they go north due to the Coriolis effect. The Earth's rotation is highest at the equator, and zero at the poles. The bodies of air in the hurricane had that eastward motion from the rotation at lower latitudes. As they move north, they keep that motion, while the ground underneath moves more slowly, resulting in net winds to the east from the groundling point of view.

Just in case, though, apparently everyone here in the tail end of the panhandle has panicked and bought ALL the water, including seltzer water - all that was left last night was the super fancy stuff - even the canned sodas were hard hit.

We still grabbed a little more bread and other non-perishables, as active as this season has been, and as long as its been since a storm hit here... well, if not Irma, its likely to be something else.

Interestingly, the question is what side of Florida it will head up. Although given the size of this storm it probably does not make as much or a difference beyond what other states get the remnants.

Jesus. That eye looks exactly like those storms from the movie The Day After Tomorrow. The only things missing are Jake Hyllenhaal slogging through three feet of water, and the troposphere coming down to instafreeze evacuees.

People do panic buying, just stay calm and get things like non-perishables.

One blizzard we were forecast to lose power. Unfortunately I was stopping at the store on a routine shopping day. Myself and another person used to storms laughed in the line as practically everyone in there was buying stuff that would go bad if their refrigerator stopped working.

It looks like it will be about a category 3 when it gets to us. It's predicted to come right up the center of the state so there is only one direction to go and that's north.

I don't think mass evacuation will be possible. The barrier islands and everything east of US 1 will be evacuated but those of us inland will just have to put up our shutters, batten down our hatches and hope for the best. I have an older home that has survived a few hurricanes and I also have a new roof. If we have a lot of surge... well there is going to be little we can do about that. Most likely we will be grabbing our cats and hoping for a kind neighbor with a boat.

I'm working from home today so that I can get my potted plants in the house and help hubby with shutters.

We have most of our hurricane supplies. I'm going to go out later and forage a bit to see if I can find some batteries. Outside of that, were as prepared as we can be. When things get too scary, we have rum, LOTS of rum. And a generator so I can post live after having LOTS of rum.

My best friend's employers are "deciding" whether to close until the hurricane passes. Why this is a decision is beyond me.

If they don't close, I'm going to stress to him that a desk job is not worth risking his safety for.

Relax everyone. These hurricanes are just a vast conspiracy to sell groceries.

Rush Limbaugh Claims Hurricane Irma Is Part Of A Vast Conspiracy

Quote:
In a transcript of his Tuesday radio show, Limbaugh repeatedly complained about the stores in Palm Beach ― where he lives and broadcasts from ― being out of water despite the uncertainty of the storm’s path.

Limbaugh also claimed the storm was being used to push an environmental agenda. He said, “People in all of these government areas” are “hell-bent” on proving climate change.
Limbaugh himself has been known to produce enough hot air to be considered a category 3 storm, so he should know.

I'm in the metro Tampa Bay area and Interstate 75 Northbound is already packed. Water sold out like mad here, too. The guy at Winn-Dixie told me yesterday that they had 15 pallets of water sell out in less than 90 minutes.

All people have to do is clean and fill a bathtub with water, and get non-perishable food. Fortunately for us, we have a gas stove but people should consider a generator of some sort.

I have refillable containers that I use when I'm camping so I just fill those with filtered water from my tap. The largest one, I just fill directly from the tap. Tap water is ... well, drinkable water.

I also fill sandwich bags with water, double bag them with quart bags and put them in my freezer. It keeps my stuff frozen longer and I can use them as water when they melt.

Also, reminder to pet owners, if you have dogs, pick up some puppy pads or papers because it may be several hours before you can open the door and let them out. For cats, have extra cat litter and make sure you have food on hand for them too. Also pets and candles don't go well together so I'd recommend not using candles if you have pets and kids. The party store (which almost no one is visiting) has lots of battery powered candles.

Paper plates, plastic forks and glasses are helpful too.

I recommend doing your laundry before everything hits. Last time (hurricane Wilma) I missed this and we had some drainage issues on the block and I could not use the washing machine for a few weeks.

Be prepared for the power to be out at least a week if not longer. I bought a few solar chargers and some solar lights on Amazon but I have regular flash lights too. When your house is crowded with all the crap you brought in from outside it's easy to trip over stuff.

Oh and rum, don't forget rum. Because when that bitch Irma hits at 185 mph I suspect I'm going to need a couple of shots. If you see me hurricane lifted over S. Florida I can guarantee it will be on a broom and carrying a bottle of rum.
