It's a fair bet they're going to prove expensive.

Theresa May chased from church as angry crowd brands Prime Minister a 'coward'

Quote:
On Friday afternoon, word spread she was due to come back, this time to visit St Clement’s Church, where volunteers had been boxing up donations. Before long a crowd had gathered, filling the street outside the church.

As they waited, the people became increasingly hostile, shouting at her to come out and face them. One man began chanting: “Get her out! Get her out!”, while another screamed at police barring the door to the church: “Why have you brought her here? If she cared she would have come yesterday.”
It's almost as if people had memories of previous actions.

It's not unreasonable to extend the parliament over two years, it seems to me. The "Great Repeal Bill" is going to be a hugely complex piece of legislation and that, combined with parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit, is going to take up all available time.

Other than necessary business like The Budget, they're not going to have time for much else over the next couple of years, so there won't be anything new to announce next year.

Plus it means they won't have to re-open negotiations with the DUP before a 2018 Queen's Speech.

All this assumes, of course, that this government survives that long, which is rather open to question.

Well if they are that short for time they could always try cancelling their july to september summer breaks. That's 12 weeks of work they could fill in with.

Interesting analysis on the result in the Economist:

The stronger the remain vote, the larger the swing to labour. May wanted a Brexit General Election, she got it.

I like how these people think that the Prime Minister would wisely use the extra time to improve the situation rather than find new and more innovative ways to make things worse.

or she could simply just wait for another preventable tragedy.

Brexiters predicted a soon breaking apart of the EU after the UK-Referendum.

Their hope the elections in the Netherlands, in France and the coming elections in Germany would strengthen the anti-EU-forces were bitterly disappointed..
Now in France the convinced European Macron won a huge majority.

The american Pew Research Centre published a study about the "EU-mood" in different european countries. It shows that nowhere in Europe the people want to leave the EU, not even in Greece,
So it is often mentioned, that the political "turmoils" on the british Island strengthend the EU, people became more aware of the advantages of the EU, the political and the economic ones, and back more than ever before the Idea of the EU, despite critique in details

Why do I get the image of the DUP behaving like a spoiled brat?

Could be because I've seen something similar elsewhere.

The DUP (and Sinn Fein, too) are notorious for going right up to the wire in negotiations, but given this government's approach to negotiating in general (e.g. Brexit) it would not surprise me at all if the problem is not simply HMG not having its act together.

I guess they have until the vote on the Queen's Speech next week to agree something, and I suspect the government may be banking on the fact the DUP won't do anything that's likely to put Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street, because of his historical connections with Irish Republicanism, but I am not sure that taking the DUP for granted won't come back and bite them.

So, is the only reason Theresa May is still PM that nobody else in the Tories wants the job at this point?

The thing about replacing her is that who would they pick... cos Boris sure as hell ain't gonna be any better and he seemed to be the favourite.

At this point the best bet looks like Hammond as he is now starting to talk the truth about brexit. For that reason he has zero chance of taking the leadership.

Tories seem to be slowly realising that Brexit is going to be enormously damaging and very few of them want to be at the helm at the point we hit that particular iceberg.

This is a bit off topic but it's something I've been wondering about since Brexit started.

Are only European countries allowed to join the EU?
