Julian Assange: Sweden drops rape investigation

Quote:
Sweden's director of public prosecutions has decided to drop the rape investigation into Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
Marianne Ny said Mr Assange's arrest warrant was being revoked, apparently ending a seven-year stand-off.
Mr Assange, 45, has lived in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012, fearing extradition to Sweden would lead to extradition to the US.
Police in London said they would still be obliged to arrest him if he left.
The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) said Mr Assange still faced the lesser charge of failing to surrender to a court, an offence punishable by up to a year in prison or a fine.
But the UK has not commented on whether it has received an extradition request from the US, where Mr Assange could face trial over the leaking hundreds of thousands of secret US military and diplomatic documents.

Dear god, it's about time. I wonder if he managed to leave the building at least once throughout the investigation?

It's a shame that he only stands to serve up to a year in prison in the UK for skipping bail. I do hope he gets the maximum sentence and he's stuck in a maximum security prison for the whole time with no visits from celebrity retards, no internet and no press conferences.

And then he can go to the USA

The USA still has no warrant out for him. That could possibly change, but how likely that is, is unclear. A few weeks ago Comey said he was thinking about trying to go after Assange...but Comey is gone now.

From what I've read, I'd be surprised if the USA can find something with which to charge Assange that wouldn't also apply to the editors of The Guardian, Die Welt and various other non-US newspapers, plus the editor of the New York Times.

However, and this should worry Assange, if they try, he's obviously blown every chance of bail in most jurisdictions while he tries to contest the extradition request, and the USA has extradition treaties with a lot of countries.

The staff at the Ecuadorian embassy has got to be planning an epic farewell party right now.

Seriously?

The day he is arrested and either put behind bars or bloody executed will be the right moment to say "It's about time."

Life ruined, character smeared, motives questioned, afraid to go outside, shrinking from the slightest touch of affection and all because he was rap-- wait.

Just to clarify, the Bail Act offence is not affected by any decision taken by the Swedish authorities. If someone who is on trial for a criminal offence absconds and the trial continues in his absence and he's acquitted, he's nevertheless looking at a short custodial sentence for the Bail Act offence. Assange is in a not dissimilar position.

Indeed, as David Allen Green and several others point out, once he leaves the Embassy, it's open to the Swedish authorities to re-issue the warrant if they so choose.
