The Daily 202: Firing FBI director Comey is already backfiring on Trump. It’s only going to get worse.

Sean Spicer wrapped up his brief interview with Fox Business from the White House grounds late Tuesday night and then disappeared into the shadows, huddling with his staff behind a tall hedge. To get back to his office, Spicer would have to pass a swarm of reporters wanting to know why President Trump suddenly decided to fire the FBI director. For more than three hours, Spicer and his staff had been scrambling to answer that question. Spicer had wanted to drop the bombshell news in an emailed statement but it was not transmitting quickly enough, so he ended up standing in the doorway of the press office around 5:40 p.m. and shouting a statement to reporters who happened to be nearby. He then vanished, with his staff locking the door leading to his office.
Truly, dare I say.. unpresidented.

Given Trump's track record for nominating the heads of organizations who are fundamentally against the organizations for which they've been nominated, I just know he's going to nominate John Dillinger for the post.

It wouldn't be a yuge surprise, since he also doesn't appear to know that other historical figures are dead.

Refusal to run his planned Senate testimony by administration officials was the last straw

Quote:
Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had wanted a heads-up from Comey about what he would say at a May 3 hearing about his handling of an investigation into former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

When Comey refused, Trump and his aides considered that an act of insubordination and it was one of the catalysts to Trump’s decision this week to fire the FBI director, the officials said.

"It gave the impression that he was no longer capable of carrying out his duties," one official said. Previews of congressional testimony to superiors are generally considered courteous.

Before he axed Comey, Trump had publicly expressed frustration with the FBI and congressional probes into the Russia matter. Moscow has denied meddling in the election and the Trump administration denies allegations of collusion with Russia.

A former Trump adviser said Trump was also angry because Comey had never offered a public exoneration of Trump in the FBI probe into contacts between the U.S. ambassador to Russia, Sergei Kislyak, and Trump campaign advisers last year.

According to this former adviser, Comey's Senate testimony on the Clinton emails likely reinforced in Trump's mind that "Comey was against him."

"He regretted what he did to Hillary but not what he did to Trump," the former Trump adviser said of Comey.
That last part adds even a little more context to the need for Trump to insert the baloney about "I am not under investigation" into Comey's termination letter. Comey refused to ever actually say such a thing directly, so Trump used the letter to put the words into Comey's mouth, knowing Comey was no longer in an official positon to refute them.

I don't think Comey and all the people working for him are idiots. I'm sure there are backup copies of the information. They know Trump is a vindictive asshole, and they would have made copies in self-defense. I know I would have.

Remember, it wasn't the Watergate break-in that doomed Nixon, it was the cover-up afterwards. And Trump's administration is way less organized than Nixon's. They would fail badly if they tried.

Enough Was Enough’: How Festering Anger at Comey Ended in His Firing | NYT

Quote:
After President Trump accused his predhttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/10/us/politics/trump-comey-firing.html?ribbon-ad-idx=4&src=trendingecessor in March of wiretapping him, James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director, was flabbergasted. The president, Mr. Comey told associates, was “outside the realm of normal,” even “crazy.”

For his part, Mr. Trump fumed when Mr. Comey publicly dismissed the sensational wiretapping claim. In the weeks that followed, he grew angrier and began talking about firing Mr. Comey. After stewing last weekend while watching Sunday talk shows at his New Jersey golf resort, Mr. Trump decided it was time. There was “something wrong with” Mr. Comey, he told aides.

Comey made a statement about his firing.

Quote:
To all:
I have long believed that a President can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all. I'm not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed. I hope you won't either. It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply.
I have said to you before that, in times of turbulence, the American people should see the FBI as a rock of competence, honesty, and independence. What makes leaving the FBI hard is the nature and quality of its people, who together make it that rock for America.
It is very hard to leave a group of people who are committed only to doing the right thing. My hope is that you will continue to live our values and the mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution.
If you do that, you too will be sad when you leave, and the American people will be safer.
Working with you has been one of the great joys of my life. Thank you for that gift.
Jim Comey

Pelosi threatens to force vote on outside Russia probe

Quote:
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday urged GOP leaders to bring the legislation to the floor next week when Congress returns to Washington following a recess. If they decline, as expected, Democrats will try to force a vote with a discharge petition.
If she can get 20 Republicans to go along, Ryan has to let the House vote on it.

I have an image in my head (maybe hopeful or delusional) of Trump et al scurrying hither and thither to try to cover up their crimes whilst every day, in the background, the slow, steady cogs of judicial process continue to grind on down the tracks.

The question is will he have a successful cover up? The republicans in congress seem ok with that and he gets to nominate the next fbi director.

That does certainly sound about right. Trump is a vindictive ass, and will lash out at anyone who doesn't kiss his ass. Though, I still like my theory that Comey came too close to Trump during his Russian collusion investigation. Maybe it's a combination of both. Trump wanted Comey gone after his remarks about the President being crazy, but couldn't quite find the right time to axe him, until now.

Bizzare Happenings After Trump Fires FBI Director Comey

Quote:
The FBI director thought his firing was a joke
The FBI Director was speaking to the agency's Los Angeles office when news of his firing reportedly broke on a TV in the back of the room. He laughed, because what else do you do in that situation, and admired what he figured was a prank. Then some staffers pulled him into an office and informed him that this is real life.
Quote:
Rudy Giuliani happens to be in town
Hours after Tuesday's sun had set on Washington, D.C., two reporters happened upon former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani by the bar of the Trump International Hotel there ... though he told The Atlantic and New York Magazine that he wasn't going to be Trump's nominee for FBI director, he did say he was stopping by the White House.

Also, another White House source told New York Magazine that Giuliani is, in fact, in consideration.

This story seems to have eclipsed media attention to the AHCA. It worries me that the timing of the Comey firing is being leveraged as a distraction from the AHCA activities. Paranoid? Oh hell yes.

A lone female senator has been invited to a Senate meeting on health care.

you can always count on McConnell to check his morals at the door in favor of what is politically best for McConnel.

This makes any attempt at appointing special prosecutor very slim. A select committee could be formed, but they would have no power to prosecute, they could only issue a report, much like the 9/11 committee. If McConnell sticks to his guns it is all pretty much in the hands of the current Senate investigation, or the Trump appointed deputy AG, or whoever takes over at the FBI.
Don't forget the actual criminal prosecution, i.e. the grand juries that are currently operating. There is also talk that Schneiderman of SDNY is pursuing a RICO case against Trump and co pretty vigorously!

The way things are going, congress will pass a law exempting themselves and the administration from state law.

Fortunately for Trump, a lot of his supporters have been so polarized politically that'll they'll either dismiss it as fake or see it as small fry.

When you believe his rivals are genuine demons or run slavery/peadophile rings using code words based on pizza topping, corruption and ineptitude isn't on your list of high concerns.
