GOP suffers surprise defection on Obamacare repeal

They are trying to get this thing rammed through fast before the public can put pressure on congress. Luckily, there does seem to be some in the House who are still on the fence. It if makes it out of the House, it will be very hard to keep it from becoming law.

If we can hold them back for a week, it will be very hard for them to ever get this passed in the current form.

Quote:
Privately, Republicans on the Hill and in the White House realize this week may be their last, best shot to pass the AHCA. That’s because of renewed momentum for the bill after the endorsement of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus as well as procedural constraints.

GOP lawmakers are relying on arcane Senate budget rules in an attempt to pass their health care plan with a 51-vote majority in the Senate, rather than the typical 60-vote threshold required for most legislation.

But Republicans can’t move on to their next big priority — tax reform — without launching a new budget process and canceling out their existing authority to pass health reform at the lower threshold. That would effectively kill the measure as Democrats would certainly block any Obamacare repeal bill that requires 60 votes.

The coverage on CNN made it sound like there was no way it would pass.

Republicans Could Actually Pass This Health Care Bill

Quote:
House Republicans are finally within striking distance on their health care bill, flipping at least two members through a small amendment and shoring up support among some undecided members through good old-fashioned whipping. But GOP leadership faces the same problem they’ve had all along: They’re still short the votes, and putting the bill on the floor now and trying to eke out passage could be disastrous if the vote doesn’t go Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) way.

Republicans may vote this week anyway, after former Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Energy and Commerce member Billy Long (R-Mo.) worked out an amendment adding $8 billion over five years for states that waive Affordable Care Act protections for people with pre-existing conditions. While it initially looked like that money would go to the high-risk pools that states would have to set up as a condition of opting out of those provisions, it now looks like it will be a separate fund, though details have not been released.

Isn't the point that Trump doesn't care?

Is anyone here calling their reps about this? I don't see anyone mention that very much on SLU, so was just wondering.

My mom even called today telling our rep to vote 'no' and she's never, in her 72 years of life, made a single call to a congressperson.

I live in Canada I know more about the issues in the USA in the past 100 days then I know about Canadian Politics.
Trump needs to realize that running a country is NOT the same as running a business.
(not that he is great at this he has filed for bankruptcy 6 times!! )
If a business has a "product" that is not profitable it does no harm to drop it .
Government programs are not set up to make money. Government collects taxes and
re distributes to various state and nation programs.
Trump should be paying for all his families security, Golf Trips, etc above what is a
reasonable budget amount for this particular program like any other business
you would not have unlimited travel ,payment for trips, even security would have a budget.
I was reading today about how he wants to cut a program that helps with heat and cooling bills. This is just horrendous!
Canada has universal health care. It has its problems but no one is penalized for pre-existing conditions.
My husband has had various health issues over the years if we lived in the US he may have died, or we would be in major debt.
Trump is so out of touch with the 99% of the country it is frighting.

One of the reasons they are moving so fast and quietly on this is so they can get it passed through before people have time to protest, or even know the vote is coming. This bill is MUCH worse for the public than their first attempt..and they will vote on it Thursday. (CNN are idiots.)

House to vote Thursday on Obamacare repeal

Quote:
The House GOP’s seven-year crusade to abolish Obamacare all comes down to Thursday.

Republican leaders have called a vote on a plan to replace the health care law, signaling surging confidence that they’re on the cusp of earning enough support to pass it. Though it’s still unclear whether House Speaker Paul Ryan and his team have commitments from the 216 members necessary to pass the bill, scheduling a vote suggests they believe they’re closer than ever.
Ryan is not going to want to embarrass himself twice, so it will most likely pass. It will then be up to the Senate, and they only needs a simple majority to pass, so that is where the pressure should be applied .

Good luck, the AARP is already on this, and I've also seen references to the other end of the age spectrum; schools will lose their medicaid status and be unable to get reimbursed for expenses incurred with special needs children. So, let's fuck over the 50+ and disabled children.

God-awful Old Party strikes again.

House GOP votes to gut Obama health care law

It still has to pass the Senate.

The Senate says they're not going to vote on THAT bill. They're coming up with something else.

House Dems trolled the Republicans by singing "goodbye" to them as they voted. This will hurt in 2018. Already told my rep I'll be canvassing and phone banking for his opponent.

It sounds to me like a bunch of nonsense that will never see the light of day. They voted for it so they could tell their constituents they voted to repeal Obamacare. When it gets to the senate it will not pass. They will change it in a way that it will never pass in the house. Or so I hope.

I was wrong in an earlier post. There MIGHT be a chance that a Senate version of the bill would not need a simple majority, but would actually require 60 votes to pass.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-house-health-care-repeal-is-already-dead-in-the-senate_us_590b8a6de4b0e7021e95e9fdncid=inblnkushpm g00000009

Quote:
One reason the Senate has to pass its own measure is the Byrd Rule, an obscure procedural edict named after the late Sen. Robert Byrd. It says policy issues that do not affect spending and revenue cannot be passed with the reconciliation process. It would be up to the Senate parliamentarian to decide if everything in the House bill fits within that rubric, but Democrats have argued repeatedly that there is no way the measure would pass the test.

That would mean that any repeal bill would need 60 votes, including eight Democrats ― who have been united in opposition.
Good luck with that.

Good luck with that.
I think they can change the rules just like they did with Gorsuch. I could be wrong about that though.

The question for me now is...which states are going to self-fund expanded Medicaid if the Republicans manage to whip the Senate into passing some kind of reconciliation bill that the House would be willing to pass as well? I need to know where I am going to have to move to.
