How to Stop a Nuclear Missile

Lasers-armed drones and interceptor missiles are among America’s possible tech options for impeding a North Korean nuclear strike.

Quote:
North Korean officials recently announced that the country was on the verge of testing a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, that could reach the United States. President-elect Donald Trump drew a line in the sand. “Won’t happen,” he said on Twitter. If North Korea attempts to test an ICBM, the United States has a number of options to stop it. All carry risks.
Quote:
How close is North Korea to an actual nuclear ballistic missile and what are the president’s military and policy options? Let’s take a look.

North Korea is researching a variety of missiles that with research and development could be converted into ICBMs. In February, North Korea launched a satellite into orbit aboard its 28-meter, three-stage Unha rocket.

“Several U.S. four-star commanders have said North Korea has, or we must assume they have, the ability to reach the continental U.S. with a nuclear warhead with the Taepo Dong (Unha) missile,” said Bruce Klinger, an analyst with the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. The Unha has a range of 10,000 kilometers, sufficient to hit the United States. Klinger argues that the range might be closer to 13,000 kilometers, enough to reach the East Coast.

But shooting a satellite into space is a different feat of physics than demonstrating an ICBM, which must re-enter the earth’s atmosphere along a controlled and precise trajectory to its target.

I suppose telling North Korea "We have more" won't work?

When you're batshit crazy, the threat of nuclear annihilation loses a lot of its sting. "MAD" only had merit when neither side wanted to die.

Not to toot my own horn or anything like that; but I have been known to grin down the occasional nuclear missile.

Maybe you need to get your butt to Seattle and stand by to grin, then. Guess where the shortest great circle route from Korea to the continental US ends up?

Luckily for Seattle, if the†"strike plan" map on the wall in Kim's war-room is any indication, North Korea doesn't†believe in great circle routes:

Meanwhile, the rest of the world watches with amazement as we're treated to the spectacle of the President-elect of the USA facing up against Kim Jong Un like a pair of schoolboys, while the People's Republic of China plays the role of responsible adult.

Could we sell him on a rocket with a pilot seat and giant baseball mitt? I'd rather call him a hero than Mr. President.

It was more like a few billion dollars a year, and long ago I actually worked on it, when I worked for Boeing. I worked on Kinetic Kill Vehicles and Space Based Lasers.

The proper name was the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), although in popular media it was nicknamed "Star Wars". The current name is the Missile Defense Agency, part of the Defense Department. The "layered defense" concept is still the core idea of the program, but only parts of the system are functional. One result of the program is we now have actual railguns and combat laser weapons, but they are not yet good enough to shoot down ballistic missiles.

Or McGyver.

Actually that show's idea of faking a GPS signal was headed in the right direction. The execution was a bit laughable though.

It's quite reasonable for other nations to ramp up their military capability given how in a couple of weeks a fucking moron clown will have nukes.

I was thinking Cuba should take that overdue delivery.

And Mexico.

And Canada.

This isn't new technology, its been going on since the 50's and nobody is better prepared than the US to defend against a nuclear attack. Unfortunately South Korea isn't as well protected.

You communists should be happy to see North Korea ready to strike, they share your ideology.

North Korea is no more a communist country in the Marxian sense than Donald Trump cares about our working class. The former is a "cult of leadership" dictatorship, and may as well be called an absolute monarchy, since the office of leader is passed from father to son. The way Trump has treated his actual employees gives the lie to his statements on the campaign trail. Actions speak louder than words. He's an elitist kleptocrat.

Oddly enough, I want to put the means of production in the hands of the workers, but not by taking it by force from capitalists. Rather, the workers build their own robots and automation and become self-supporting.

What do you mean by defend? It is not like we have a force field, despite what your comics say.

Ironically, if an enemy using older tech (purely ballistic) there is even less of a chance of doing anything. Pure Newtonian dynamics when that gets launched. At least with something more advanced there is a chance of gumming up the works (sending a false guidance signal or updating the commands in-flight for example).

edit: We are probably better equipped to get some things to a bomb shelter but it would not be a world you would want to live in afterwards.

I notice Bubba was too busy exchanging snipes with trolls to get into a rollicking in good faith debate with Daniel. It's almost like Bubba's not actually looking for honest, in good faith debate, or has a skin so thin he can't look away when he's getting dissed.

Or he can't stand it when someone with real experience on a topic calls him out.

I believe we have burn units for that.
