More Inauguration Fun

In the increasingly Christian celebration ceremony that is the inauguration of the POTUS a new headline act has been added.

And she is everything that Trumpty might admire.

She's blonde and pretty.
She's been investigated for being a con artist.
She preaches that God loves you more when you're wealthy.
She also preaches that by sending money to her you are guaranteed of God's love.

And now her following with quantuple after she does the inaugural prayer.

Meet Paula White

Daily Beast has this to say:

Quote:
White is a televangelist with a huge audience and a knack for stirring controversy. She’s been a Trump booster for years, and she helped organize a summit for him in the early days of his presidential campaign with other televangelists. Her presence at the inauguration is a very strong indicator that Trump’s White House will be a safe space for the Christian right’s most controversial characters.

Think of Paula White’s ministry as the church version of Trump University. She preaches the prosperity gospel, an approach to Christianity that is, shall we say, unorthodox. Prosperity-gospel preachers teach that God wants people to be rich, and that he makes them wealthy as a sign of his blessing and favor; the richer you are, the more God loves you.

Because, you know, Jesus wore wingtips and a Rolex.

These preachers also teach that the way to become wealthy is—you guessed it!—by giving them money. If you make a “seed offering”—and the bigger the better—then preachers like White say the Lord will repay your generosity with bounteous riches.
So how's that separation of church and state working out?

It's a good time for grifters, con artists and assorted other unsavory characters. It's their day in the sun. I suppose we should be grateful that, at least, they identify themselves in what is likely going to be a conga line of like-minded people seeking to curry favor with the top grifter.

Wow, I haven't seen anyone use "grifter" in forever. I first saw it in Raymond Chandler's novels and I really like it. I assumed it was a term consistent with his pre-war scene.

At risk of derailing the thread, I thought The Grifters was a wonderful crime drama.

It seems they've now approached the British singer Rebecca Ferguson to sing at the inauguration (I thought he was all about hiring Americans, though maybe he's asked her to do it for free).

Anyway, she's accepted. On condition they let her sing "Strange Fruit". It's not yet clear what Trump makes of this.

British singer agrees to Trump inauguration — but only if she performs protest song about lynching

Odd - I've seen the word many times in my reading and watching of film and tv (see, for example: http://www.hulu.com/watch/919447 - which is 'Grifting 101' an episode that appeared in season 6 of Community).

It's possible that the first time I heard the term - possible though somewhat unlikely, was 1990's The Grifters film (already mentioned in thread). Possible, less likely, that I first saw the term in connection with Jim Thompson's 1963 novel of the same name (The Grifters) and was the source for the film.

Every day life is becoming more like my favorite dystopian novels.

In the Oryx and Crake trilogy, Margaret Atwood writes about Christian Evangelist sects centered around the accumulation of wealth in general (the "Known Fruits" because by their fruits ye shall know them lol) and the worship of Oil in particular. You can guess who these "religions" were the most popular with.

Hey I used the word grifter in the Trump New Years thread.

I use it occasionally. I have a feeling I'm going to be using it a lot more.

Well fine. My lack of cognizance has been well and truly demonstrated. I don't know how I missed "The Grifters" ; I am a Cusack fan. I do remember watching (and loving) "High Fidelity" which was released ten years later, in 2000. Don't know how I overlooked Io using the word. Forgive me, please. Maybe I let my Chandler perspective cloud my vision.

"It was about eleven o'clock in the morning, mid October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills. I was wearing my powder blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark blue clocks on them. I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn't care who knew it. I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be. I was calling on four million dollars.

The main hallway of the Sternwood place was two stories high. Over the entrance doors, which would have let in a troop of Indian elephants, there was a stained-glass panel showing a knight in dark armor rescuing a lady who was tied to a tree and didn't have any clothes on but some very long and convenient hair. The knight had pushed the vizor of his helmet back to be sociable, and he was fiddling with the knots on the ropes that tied the lady to the tree and not getting anywhere. I stood there and thought that if I lived in the house, I would sooner or later have to climb up there and help him. He didn't seem to be really trying."

From "The Big Sleep" by Raymond Chandler. I couldn't find text to copy/paste so I transcribed that from my personal copy, stolen decades ago from a library to the north. It is one of my two stolen library books; the other is "On the Road", stolen from the same library. The Chandler I admit is unabashed theft, but Kerouac should always be stolen, seems to me.
Give me a break, people! I was like eighteen!

ps: Phillip Marlowe did not commonly wear powder blue suits; he was usually in something darker.

It is possible. I was a voracious reader when younger, and picked up a decent sized vocabulary, as a result. I don't read as much these days, but that's a function of bad eyesight.

I think the term came into the more public sphere with the release of The Hustler, followed up by The Color of Money. I've not seen The Grifters.

I'm not convinced that he's racist. I think he simply doesn't care about what he says so long as it gets him applause. His drift into wackyland has been pure Skinner-box reinforcement training, with the cheers of his "nasty" followers as the reinforcer.

Nah, he's a racist, he learned it at his father's knee. And just like Dad he was dragged into court over discrimination cases like not hiring minorities to work at his casinos, not in a visible job, on the floor. He wanted that lily-white. And his comments about black people being genetically lazy, on and on. His father was more crude but he is just as racist, in the usual ruling class, delusions of superiority way.

Seriously? Exhibit A would be the whole birther nonsense he spearheaded.

But if you need more proof: Here Are 13 Examples Of Donald Trump Being Racist | The Huffington Post

Many of the Puritans that migrated to North America believed in predestination (the belief that God has already selected who will be saved since the beginning of creation) and part of that belief included looking for "signs" of who was or wasn't the Elect. Prosperity was one of the signs of God's favor.

That belief, that God has smiled on the wealthy, still lingers in a lot of American society, along with the belief that poverty, addiction, and illness are moral failings, not disease and the result of larger economic systems.

The idea that giving "Seed money" to a church is a clever grift (I read a lot of Hammett) that taps into that lingering linkage between class, luck, and religion. For someone like Trump, I can see the appeal. He isn't religious, he isn't a good man, but he has money and an unflagging belief that he is the best at everything. It also fits with how he does business (like getting donations to his "foundation" that he uses for his own needs).
