Minneapolis police classified the drowning as accidental.

Hundreds of miles away, Kevin Gannon, a retired detective with the New York Police Department, was investigating the mysterious deaths of several college men from New York state. Each of the deaths had been ruled an accidental drowning.

Gannon enlisted the help of another former NYPD officer, Anthony Duarte, when Christopher Jenkins' death became a homicide. In 2003, the two traveled to Minneapolis to investigate Jenkins' death.

They learned about a string of student drowning deaths, many of them involving young men who attended colleges along the Interstate 94 corridor in the Midwest -- in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Nine of the deceased attended the University of LaCrosse, in Wisconsin. Three attended colleges in New York state.

In all, the investigators say they've connected the bizarre drowning deaths of at least 40 college-age men across the country.

As Gannon and Duarte investigated the deaths, they began to see a trend. The cases spanned 25 cities in 11 states, and at least some of them were connected by a creepy symbol left near the water's edge: a smiley face painted on trees and other surfaces.

The detectives believe that the smiley faces were left by the killer or killers. They varied in size, with each face more haunting than the next.

The most sinister was found in Iowa. It was drawn in red with a devil's horns. Next to the smiley face was a note that read, "Evil Happy Smiley Face Man."

it does have th'makings of a goddamn urban legend. this article (from foxnews, yeah yeah) states that th' FBI couldn't find any evidence that these killings were done by some gang of serial killers.

a very interestin' part though:

Urban Legend is totally appropriate for this story...the story itself makes a commentary on the tendency of our culture (the Internet in particular) to encourage sadistic behavior. I mean, if the "Smiley Face Killer" is shown to be real...what is being done is the ultimate 'griefing', with the same motivations.

That's really the scary part about Anonymous, much as I approve of their Stand-Alone Complex like actions against things like Scientology. What happens when our (the Internet community's) smugness over RL overwhelms our reason and our morals? \I do believe there are people who get so deeply buried in the 4chan stream of anti-consciousness that they lose touch with reality.

Does this mean there are Internet-created sociopaths? Probably not. But it's a horror story moral that I think more people need to contemplate.

The cause of death has not been determined. Police Chief Tom Hanley said it may have been an accident.

"It doesn't lend itself well to think there might have been foul play," Hanley said. "We are tending to think ... it may be a tragic accident, but we're going to hold off on our final determination."

Hanley said police started focusing efforts to find Garza in the Otter Creek after an aerial photo in April spotted something of interest in the river that could have been a body. A specially trained dog later tracked Garza's scent to the riverbank above where the image was spotted, Hanley said.

Police still don't know why Garza walked away from campus on the night of Feb. 5 following a gathering with other students and not back to his dormitory in the opposite direction...
