George Zimmerman still isn't working I guess, so to make some quick cash he's announced an auction for the gun that killed Trayvon Martin, calling it a valuable "piece of American history".

Another oil spill off the Louisiana coast, luckily a relatively small one. The leak was in a Shell pipeline - from a producing well, not a drill site; so it wasn't a pressurized blow-out or anything like that. The pipeline contains numerous remote valves which were activated once the operators became aware of the leak, and it looks like the valves closed without any problems. Still, some 88,000 gallons of oil managed to spill before the pipeline was sealed off.

Shell has a cleanup company contracted for incidents like this, which is already working on containing the spill.

We have an aging oil pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac, which is the bit of water separating Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas and where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. Not only is it ground zero for Michigan tourism, it's also the damned crossroads of the Great Lakes ... you know, the world's largest fresh water reserve. The same company that runs that pipeline is the one that had a massive oil spill from a pipeline in the lower part of the state in 2010 that is STILL being cleaned up. Needless to say, a lot of people want the damned thing shut down.

Pakistan religious council: "light" wife beatings acceptable

Quote:
In the 75-page proposal, Mohammad Khan Sheerani suggests a light beating is acceptable should the need arise to punish a woman. The proposal bans forceful beating, saying only a small stick is necessary to instill fear.

The Council of Islamic Ideology is a powerful constitutional body that advises the Pakistani legislature whether laws are in line with the teachings of Islam.

Its proposed bill is seen as a response to the rejected Punjab Women Protection bill for abused women. The council shunned it as "un-Islamic" and wrote its own bill, which includes the recommendation for the light beating.

"A husband should be allowed to lightly beat his wife if she defies his commands and refuses to dress up as per his desires; turns down demand of intercourse without any religious excuse or does not take bath after intercourse or menstrual periods," Pakistan's Express-Tribune newspaper cited the proposal as saying.

The proposal also calls for a beating if a woman does not wear a hijab, if she interacts with strangers, speaks too loudly or gives others cash without her husband's permission, according to the newspaper.

The Giro d'Italia bicycle race which is currently underway, is due to route briefly through France in the coming week. However, French farmers have successfully lobbied the race organizers into agreeing that the official mascot of this year's race - a big, cuddly anthropomorphic wolf - will not make appearances while the race is in France, calling the very existence of the mascot offensive to French farmers.

Quote:
Lupo Wolfie, who became the Giro’s mascot last year, was due to accompany the race when it enters the Hautes-Alpes department in south-eastern France for stages 19 and 20 next week.

However, his proposed presence has provoked outrage among Jeunes Agriculteurs 05 – a union that defends the interests of local farmers under the age of 35 – because they say it is mocking the number of attacks they have suffered on their livestock in recent months.

“The display of such a mascot in the midst of our pastures, which is supported by most environmental groups, is pure provocation that is not humanly acceptable to the farmers,” said a statement form the group. “Farmers are tired of seeing the wolf only presented to public opinion as a nice soft toy.”

I agree it's a little over the top. However, I am not a young farmer who lost (valuable) stock to wolves. The article says that farmers are tired of seeing wolves depicted as "cuddly". And considering the number of attacks on livestock recently, I can kinda sorta see their point.

I am absolutely in agreement that many things about France (and the US, and just about everywhere else) are pretty damned weird, stupid, and funny. But sometimes, there is a little more to something than a flippant newspaper article shows.

Please remember that most British papers (this was from the Guardian, I see), just *love* mocking the French. And French papers don't miss many opportunities to retaliate.

It just gets rather tiring at times.

That's hilarious...but the story sticks in my craw because it annoys me that the news keeps referring to people who screw with these signs as "hackers" - like this happened because some crack team of IT-savants sitting in a dark room somewhere hacked into the construction sign network. These things have small keyboards attached to them - if the construction crew forgets to lock the little cubby door, you just open the thing and type in a new message. "Man I totally hacked that shiznit yo, I'm a hacker."

Christopher Simcox, 55, of Arizona has been convicted on two counts in the molestation of a 5-year-old girl.

Quote:
Christopher Allen Simcox was found guilty on charges that he molested a 5-year-old girl and showed her pornography. He escaped a mandatory life sentence when the jury acquitted him on charges that he engaged in sexual conduct with a 6-year-old girl.
A molestation conviction carries a sentence of 10 to 24 years in prison. Simcox, who was convicted on two molestation counts, is scheduled to be sentenced on July 5.

An attorney who assisted him at trial said Simcox, 55, will still likely spend the rest of his life in prison, given Arizona's tough sentencing guidelines.
Simcox has some notoriety as a founder of "Minuteman", a vigilante group of private citizens that wore military equipment and prowled the US/Mexico border looking for illegal immigrants to capture and turn over to the USCBP. According to the article, he briefly ran against McCain in the 2010 GOP Senate primary, although he wasn't in the running long enough to make the ballot.

All beaches at Disney's Buena Vista resort area in Florida have been closed, after a two-year-old boy was captured by an alligator at a lagoon on the resort yesterday evening. The family was attending an "outdoor movie night" at the side of the lagoon and the boy was wading in the water when the alligator showed up and grabbed him, according to witnesses. The child's parents tried to free him from the alligator's mouth, but the animal was able to get away and disappear under the water with the child. Authorities began immediately searching for the alligator or the boy, but have found neither as of this afternoon.

Witnesses said no one else except the boy was in the water at the time of the attack. The lagoon is not for swimming and is marked by several conspicuous "No Swimming" signs, including at the area of the lakeside where the event attendees had congregated.

The late Sir Clement Freud, a 10-year British MP and the grandson of Sigmund Freud, was accused last night of child molestation by two women.

One of the women had been raised as a daughter by Freud and says that he began molesting her at 10 years old and continued to do so until she left his charge at 19. The second woman, says that Freud molested her once as a young teenager and then violently raped her when she was 18. Both stories were made public last night in an ITV documentary. Freud's surviving widow has apologized to both women; Freud himself died in 2009.

I dunno if the lake in question is really known as an "alligator hole" - well, any more than that entire half of Florida counts as one. But I kind of suspect that the signage you suggest wouldn't have made a difference. I'm not all that confident that parents who see a sign saying "no swimming" and let a 2-year-old child play in the water anyway because they don't see any obvious hazards, wouldn't also see a "danger alligators" sign and let the kid play in the water anyway if they don't see any obvious alligators. That's assuming they took the time to read the signage at all, no matter how conspicuous.

"Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

Do this! Don't do that!
Can't you read the sign?"

That's the problem. There are so many signs out there that most people don't even really notice them anymore. Over saturation.

I'm not saying the parents were or were not negligent. You can't watch your children every second of every day. You can't protect them from everything that can harm them either. Being one of those kids who could disappear (and did often enough) in the blink of an eye, I think I know what I'm talking about.

Did I ever tell you guys about the time there was that bad thunderstorm when I was about 6 years old and I was so scared (everyone else was asleep) that I hid under my brother's bed and then next morning when I woke up it was too late to sneak back to my own room because they were already awake and looking for me (Mother thought I'd run away). I was scared to come out from under the bed...

No? ok I won't bore you with the story then.

Yeah but there's a reason for that, and that reason is "Lawsuit, lawsuit, everywhere a lawsuit." People get hurt, and then they sue because there wasn't a sign warning them, and then they ignore the warning sign and get hurt again, and then sue because there was nothing to stop them from ignoring the warning sign.
