Keating and McCain

I was doing some research last night and stumbled over a name in a context I had forgotten. Senator John McCain was a member of the infamous Keating Five - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which is thought to have cost taxpayers ~$3.8B to bail out Keating's failed Lincoln Savings and Loan.

Apparently I wasn't the first to remember this: 2008 John McCain lobbyist controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'll let the links speak for themselves as I don't have an opinion on this. I was just surprised.

Gosh.. I wonder if he'll be swift boated during the campaign?

Trading Intel for medical treatment is as far as I know against the rules..

Of course, nobody's allowed talk about that, because he was a POW.

anybody doubts the truth of that.. go have a look.

See why they call him "songbird"

lol, the google search on "songbird McCain" is tainted as fuck.. and there are no references on Snopes.. I find that suspect.

Well I could have posted a link to John McCain: Campaign Finance/Money - Contributions - 2008 and note how much the current banking crisis looks a whole lot like the S&L mess ("It's the regulator's fault, not ours!") or even this link John McCain: Campaign Finance/Money - Contributions - 2008 and note the surprising largess of "retired" contributors, and that Charles Keating seems to have dropped off the planet (or took an alias).

Or I could have posted a link which was much more direct in its title like Is John McCain a Crook? - Chris Suellentrop - Slate Magazine. But I didn't.

Nevertheless, Senator McCain looks pretty cozy with the financial industry.

Democrats would want to get the finger out and start highlighting this stuff...

I get an awful feeling the kid gloves the media has on for him will remain.. and that there will be a President McCain next November as a consequence.

I agree that... anyone who criticizes McCain for being a prisoner of war, and anything he may or may not have done as a POW, is essentially handing him the presidency.

I'm not understanding what relevance there is in bringing up his Vietnam record when according to that Wikipedia entry this took place in 1989.

I'm just tagging on possible attack angles... It pisses me off that he gets treated with such reverence.

He's a crook... treat him like one.

Except this particular thing has nothing to do with him being a POW, so there was no point in bringing it up to me.

And anyway,

"After months of testimony revealed that all five senators acted improperly to differing degrees, the senators maintained they were following the status quo of campaign funding practices. In August 1991, the committee concluded that Cranston's, DeConcini's, and Riegle's conduct constituted substantial interference with the FHLBB's enforcement efforts and that they had interfered at the behest of Charles Keating. The Ethics Committee concluded that Glenn's and McCain's involvement in the scheme was minimal.[4] The committee recommended censure for Cranston and criticized the other four for "questionable conduct.""

"After 1999, the only member of the Keating Five remaining in the U.S. Senate was John McCain, who is the Republican candidate in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. Before McCain was named the presumptive nominee, The New York Times ran an article on January 28, 2008 revisiting the scandal in addition to some other allegations of inappropriate behavior by McCain. Robert S. Bennett, whom McCain had hired to represent him in this matter, defended McCain's character and was one of many people who criticized the piece. Bennett, who was the special investigator during the Keating Five scandal that The Times revisited in the article, said that he fully investigated McCain back then and suggested to the Senate Ethics Committee to not pursue charges against McCain because of "no evidence against him." Bennett was coincidentally on Hannity and Colmes the night the story broke to talk about his autobiography. On the show, he said that he felt the Committee pursued charges against McCain because, without him, the case would have been entirely against Democrats. [6]"

I think the only way a Republican will get elected is if there's a gay Taiwanese transgendered sex scandal involving the Democratic candidate, the KKK and peeing on bibles. A Republican that is so much like Bush 2.0 has no chance in hell.

Oh I didn't say it was linked, that would be ridiculous.

I was just attacking the very nature of his candidacy.. folks are afraid to criticise, if you think the right wing sludge machine would have any such inhibitions then I think you've probably been on Mars the past 10 years

Perhaps this is where Mark Penn would come in handy for the GE

But when you say "people are afraid to criticize McCain because he's a POW," and this thread was started criticizing him, but you were the only person bringing up that he was a POW... you see what I mean?

At any rate it looks like for this particular thing there was very little he had to do with it.

Attacks on Kerry's service worked because most people that served with him didn't like him, because he was a douche. Also, he took advantage of the purple hearts to shorten his time spent over there, and personally made a very big deal about his service. McCain doesn't go around bragging about what he did. He certainly isn't going to go to the convention and give a salute and say, "Der de der, I am reporting for duty!"

The left definitely should attack McCain on his Vietnam years. I mean, the right did it to Kerry!! You need to do it to McCain, to make things fair! Hahaha

Yes, the right always has a reason, an honourable excuse. but then, if I controlled the media so would I.
