Barbie can be a computer engineer?

Well, after she gets the boys in the office to do the real work for her, maybe her company can send her back to school for a degree in some kind of computer stuff. *girlish giggle*

Barbie F*cks It Up Again

Quote:
I recently paid a visit to my sweet friend Helen Jane and was excited to find this book at her house.

(The second book of the "2 Books in 1!" is "Barbie [i can be…] an Actress." We'll get to that later.) Helen Jane has two little girls under the age of six. I have a daughter who is almost two.

"This is great!" I said. "Barbie wants to be a computer engineer! And fifty stickers!"

"Yeah, I was really excited at first, too," Helen Jane said. "Because, like you, I believe in the good of people. But then, like I'm sure you've experienced a million times, I was reminded you should never believe in the good of people."

"Oh, no. Should I read it?"

"You must. Immediately."
The book has Barbie in total crash mode all the way through. Not that the Barbie crew ever expects much from their audience, considering they felt they had to bundle the story with a more appropriate selection:

Jesus H. Steinem, for the actress story they have no problem writing Barbie as an actual freakin' professional, completely on her game (check out the 'See inside' link, much of the book is there). But put a computer in her hands and it's break the internet time. (Sorry, Kim Kardashian, but you have nothing on Barbie in casual Friday wear!)

Fortunately, the internet is good at fixing itself - with the help of a hacker or two: Feminist Hacker Barbie

Good grief - that's all I have to say about Barbie being a computer engineer. Oh and this too... The whole concept of Barbie and Skipper being too dumb to figure it out without help from a guy just makes me feel kind of stabbity. This is one of the reasons why I nearly am almost always the only women in the room at meetings and conferences I attend.

I am a.) blonde.. b.) skinny due to a genetic disposition (I actually have to eat to keep up my weight.).. c.) blue eyes.. d) cute smile.. all the ingredients to look like a barbie princess, and often mistaken for one.

To that I say, Ffff.. Barbie. I AM a computer engineer and that's how I make my living and I'm quite happy about it.

It certainly doesn't help

Why So Few Women Are Studying Computer Science

Quote:
Women earn just 18% of undergraduate degrees awarded for computer science. At top research universities, that number is 14%, according to the Anita Borg Institute.
What is most startling about that number is that it does not represent progress. In 1985, women earned 37% of computer-science undergraduate degrees.
I got my degree back in the "good old days" of the 37% so I'm always gobsmacked that things actually got worse not better. Over the years I've seen my department actively trying to recruit women for IT careers; the extra effort means that about 25% are women.

It's hard to raise the numbers as there just aren't enough female graduates coming out of university.

The Amazon reviews are awesome. I wondered why it got any 5-star reviews. The answer: sarcasm.

Not to get too in-depth about a kids' book. . .but at what point was Barbie ever actually a "computer engineer" in that story?

She was a student in a computing class who was just coming up with a basic concept for a program, already aware that she had no idea how to complete the program. . .in the process she fucks up her own computer AND her sister's computer with a virus. . .she gets help from two guys who will probably end up working for Geek Squad for $9/hour when they graduate. . .and she gets a passing grade for having an idea even though she never really accomplished anything herself. . .

Is that all one needs to do to qualify as a Computer Engineer in Barbie World?

I can see why kids are drawn to these stories. I want to live in that world, too.

It was supposedly intended to show girls the best way to become an engineer. It, apparently, was approved by a focus group consisting of gamergate members.

The company did compromise and remove the page where Barbie makes the guys sandwiches.

Mattel apologizes for inept computer engineer Barbie | Fox News

Quote:
The Random House book caught the eye of author Pamela Ribon—whose fiery take on the "misogynistic" tome was reprinted by Gizmodo—and Amazon reviewers, who gave the book at least 97 one-star reviews before it was yanked off the site yesterday, Consumerist notes.
Quote:
Mattel has apologized for the book, stating on the Barbie Facebook page that the book was first published in 2010, that it "doesn't reflect the Brand's vision for what Barbie stands for," and that the book series has been revamped since then.

IDK, I've met with "computer engineers" that'd fail to live up to even that >.>

You know what is scary about this. The book was written by Susan Marenco, who handled many "I Can Be" books and worked for Microsoft for 10 years as a technical editor and "usability designer." Emphasis is mine. Microsoft also has some splaining to do.

.@Spacekatgal RT @secboffin Well that's weird. Mattel just introduced Computer Engineer Ken, who also can't program but costs 20% more.
