So, not quite dead yet.

Hush, Puppies: women dominate the 2017 Hugo Awards in Helsinki, after alt-right conservatives upset about liberal, social-justice-oriented points of view becoming prominent in science fiction writing forced "slates" of white and generally-conservative-themed nominees during the 2015 and (to a lesser extent) 2016 awards. The effective "hijacking" of the 2015 awards led to the drafting of new voting rules, which were passed last year and first came into effect this year.

NK Jemisin, who last year became the first woman-of-color to win a Best Novel award, this year became the first to win it two years in a row (this year for The Obelisk Gate). In fact, the only other authors period with back to back Best Novels are Orson Scott Card and Lois Bujold.

Taylor Swift assault case: Judge throws out DJ's lawsuit - BBC News

Quote:
Pop star Taylor Swift has won a key victory in her court battle with ex-radio DJ David Mueller, whom she claims groped her at a 2013 concert. Mr Mueller, 55, originally sued the pop star for $3m (£2.3m), saying she cost him his job.

His claim was dismissed on Friday in a Denver court. US District Judge William Martinez ruled that Ms Swift was not liable, as Mr Mueller had not proved she set out to get him fired.

Here's rather a fun look at one of the seemingly never-ending procession of purveyors of "new age" nutrition BS, with some eleven million Facebook followers, and (of course) a delightful line of stuff you can buy to help you live longer, including "“sundried cane juice crystals,” which are marketed as a healthy alternative to sugar, and “blue butterfly powder,” which is “known to promote vitality and healthy aging.”". And amidst his very slightly padded educational resume is "a masters degree in nutrition, but the institution where this degree came from was the University of Integrated Science California, a for-profit college where you can major in things like “Tachyon Holistic Wellness” and the "Veganic Master Program.""

I have to admit, "Veganic Master" sounds positively Lovecraftian.

I'm a little late to the discussion but my beef with LED lights are the extra-white ones seen in more and more car headlights. I find them utterly blinding. Maybe Wolf and I just have weird eyes. Are all of you saying these types of lights don't blind you at night? I know there are many types of LED lights, use what you like in your homes, but the extra (blue/cold) white ones were spawned by evil monsters and should be banned.

Yeah, I don't really think LEDs are ready for prime time, when it comes to headlights. I've never really liked non-halogen headlights in general - that definitely includes the weird blue HIDs, not just LEDs. The lights are way brighter and scatter more than halogen lamps, which it seems NOBODY ever thinks to compensate for by re-aiming the headlights a little lower. If they would just do that, it might not be so much of a problem for other drivers; but they don't, probably because that would take a little bit of consideration for other people.

I'm a big advocate of using LEDs in all your other vehicle lights, where projection isn't the point - side markers, turn signals, tail/stops, etc. And (now that "warm white" is a thing) interior ones too. They use less power, which is kind to your battery, especially when the engine isn't running. But, when it comes to headlamps, I prefer halogens.

LEDs come in so many color temperatures and spectra, though - it's difficult to discuss them meaningfully without common points of reference.

As for white car LEDs, though, yes, those I do find very uncomfortable. Household bulbs, though - FSM only knows what brand/model the one is in my room at the moment - it was a spare courtesy of the roomie/landlord - but it's a very pleasant nature, somewhat along daylight lines. That said, I'm looking to replace it with some kind of smart lighting system shortly, likely a Philips Hue starter kit, with three panchromatic bulbs and a bridge; being HomeKit approved, it's sanely designed from a security perspective, and the lighting characteristics do seem to be as wonderfully versatile as one could hope, able to recreate a huge range of hues, natural and funky, all from the convenience of one's phone, desktop browser, or suchlike.

Come to that, has anyone else here played with such lighting? I admit, the geek in me is enthralled by the prospect of being able to play with basically 24-bit RGB room lighting, without even having to leave my bed at night.

Those blue headlights blind me worse than any other color.

I'm not weird. It's just that most people can't see in the dark as well as I can. And when you add light like headlights aimed right at my eyes, all it does is blind me.

There is a reason it is wise not to stare at the (camp)fire at night. If anything should happen to stalk and/or attack you, your eyes won't have time to adjust to the lack of light and you'd be dead.

Maybe that's it - I find the led headlights horrific - but the inside my house ones are fine.

I also think old fashioned lights can't go completely, since they have applications that LED cannot do -like heat lamps.

They all blind me.

It's why I stopped driving at night after I almost got turned into a speed bump on I-81 one night by an invisible semi that was hidden in the massive sea of blank white in my rear window.

I can see satellites in orbit at night, but a street scene, especially in the rain, is like something out of a 70's psychedelic disco/laser light show to me.

You're not the only ones. I have no issues with LED lighting at home and in businesses (I particularly like the "soft white" variety at 2700K), but those bright blue-white ones in car headlights are annoying and borderline terrifying.

We've never needed it before, but we do now: We need a law defining the maximum brightness of low-beam vehicle headlights.

White Helmets: 7 rescuers shot dead in Syria gun attack - CNN

Quote:
Seven members of the White Helmets rescue group were shot dead Saturday by unidentified gunmen who stormed the volunteers' office in northwestern Syria, the group and opposition activists said. The White Helmets have brought to light the scale of the Syrian conflict in a painfully visceral way, documenting their recovery operations through video and photo.
