Parasites invading Houses of Parliament

Couldn't resist with a heading like this.

Parasites invading Houses of Parliament

Quote:
A bed bug expert says an infestation of the insects in people's homes has been traced back to the Houses of Parliament.
Managers at Westminster say urgent action has been taken to tackle the parasites, which live in upholstery as well as bedding.
Bed bugs are not dangerous, but can cause itchy red bites.

Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah will retire, opening door for a Romney candidacy - The Washington Post

Quote:
Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) announced Tuesday that he will end a four-decade congressional career at the close of 2018, instantly unleashing the widespread presumption that former presidential contender Mitt Romney will seek to replace him.

Hatch, who is 83 and a close ally of President Trump, decided to step down despite strong encouragement from the president to run for an eighth term in the Senate.

“Every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves. And for me, that time is soon approaching,” Hatch said. “That’s why after much prayer and discussion with family and friends, I’ve decided to retire at the end of this term.”

His decision triggers an open contest in heavily Republican Utah — but it also establishes Romney, a frequent Trump critic, as an instant front-runner. And it sets the stage for Romney to play a very different role in the Senate than Hatch has, potentially complicating the president’s already rocky relationship with the GOP on Capitol Hill.

Romney, 70, has not made any definitive public statements about his plans.

That is rather interesting. Perhaps the Mercers aren't jumping off the Trump ship just yet. That, sadly, is going to be a big boost for him if big money is standing with him.

Windsor official wants beggars removed before Prince Harry, Meghan Markle wedding - The Globe and Mail
Quote:
Simon Dudley, the leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council, wrote on Twitter there had been an "epidemic of rough sleeping and vagrancy" in the town and said he wanted police "to focus on dealing with this before the #RoyalWedding."

"This is creating a concerning and hostile atmosphere for our residents and the seven million tourists who come to Windsor each year," he wrote in a letter to the local Police and Crime Commissioner Anthony Stansfield.

"It is becoming increasingly concerning to see the quantities of bags and detritus that those begging are accumulating and leaving on our pavements, at times unattended, thus presenting a security risk."

His remarks drew criticism from local homeless organizations and even Prime Minister Theresa May.

Psssht, deal with it Isa. McDonald's is treated as a proxy symbol of America worldwide - to the point where McDonalds' restaurants in other countries have been firebombed by protesters who didn't like something or other the US did that had nothing to do with trade or food. The Russian government actually seized and shut down McDonaldses in Moscow over individual US political sanctions against oligarchs during the Obama years.

https://forward.com/news/breaking-ne...vagina-museum/

Quote:
BIRMINGHAM, England (JTA) — Nine months after announcing that she is creating the world’s first vagina museum, Florence Schechter is confident that she has heard every joke on the subject.

Schechter, a Jewish comedian and communications professional in her 20s, is preparing to open the museum in Brighton, 50 miles south of London. When the news broke in the spring, it caught the attention of Conan O’Brien, who quipped: It will be “the first museum where you enter through the gift shop.”
Quote:
For now, though, the museum is little more than idea that is being promoted, albeit with considerable success. There is a web site through which UK residents can purchase buttons sporting the museum’s logo, and Schechter has been busy hosting events and giving talks. But she admits she is nowhere near collecting the necessary funds for opening a physical space, and doesn’t imagine opening one before 2020.
Quote:
For now, though, she’s thinking big. In the museum, Schechter plans to explore various perceived inequalities that are connected to vaginas. First among those themes is female genital mutilation, or FGM — a custom prevalent in some Muslim communities, which has affected 200 million women, according to the United Nations.
Quote:
Other exhibits at the museum are less controversial. Anatomical charts will be on display, to help fight widespread ignorance about the female reproductive organ. (In a 2014 survey in the United Kingdom, half of 1,000 women aged 26-35 couldn’t point out the vagina on a medical drawing of the reproductive system. Half of 2,000 men couldn’t find it either in a 2017 follow-up survey.)

If they had put real pubic hair around it the men would have found it very quickly. So would have the women.

I found this shocking.

In the UK, unlike the US, you have no right to legal representation. There is legal aid available for some who can't afford to pay for a solicitor but over time requirements to qualify for aid have been tightened until now, when 30% of criminal cases heard by magistrates have no legal representation.

Quote:
In astonishingly frank anonymous testimony submitted to their association, many magistrates said they were concerned that those without lawyers faced being found guilty of crimes they did not commit.
Quote:
In Sheffield, a legal adviser who has been working with magistrates in these courts for two decades told BuzzFeed News the situation now risks serious miscarriages of justice.
“When I first started this job everybody got legal aid for every offence. It took a sudden dip when it had to be an imprisonable offence and it’s gradually tapered off. It’s just tailed off and tailed off.”
Describing one recent case, she said: “A guy pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified. Then it came to sentencing and I’m looking at the DVLA printout and he wasn’t actually disqualified. And when I raised with him, ‘Why have you pleaded guilty to this?’ He said, ‘Because the police told me I was.’ It was only because I had the DVLA printout that it transpired that he wasn’t.”
The stories in that article include people with mental health issues and learning disabilities, people penalised for not knowing how to conduct themselves in court or knowing the expected terms of address for judges, people who end up more harshly sentenced because they simply didn't 't know court procedures.

Second outrage of the day. I don't generally read the spectator but this old article (from 2002) floated past me on twitter today. It's by Boris "Bojo The Clown" Johnson, Holder of the silver medal in the 'Worst Human Being in Politics 2016-2017' it's nauseating.

For example, here he speaks out against the fight against FGM as it's the 'African male's traditional prerogative'
Quote:
There they were, beaming with pride in some new Unicef-funded municipal shack, when a Norwegian Unicef girl stepped forward. She was wearing lipstick, earrings, court shoes, and she barked, in all seriousness, 'Where are the women?' 'Why are there no women in this group?' she wanted to know, and the poor lads shuffled and scratched their Aids-blotched heads. Almost every dollar of Western aid seems tied to some programme of female emancipation — stamping out clitorectomy, polygamy, bride-price, or whatever. And while some readers may feel vaguely that the African male should not be stampeded into abandoning his ancient prerogatives, one cannot doubt the care — bordering on obsession — with which Western workers pursue their ends.
and here he tells everyone how the British saved Africans from their own natural laziness.
Quote:
So the British planted coffee and cotton and tobacco, and they were broadly right. It is true that coffee prices are currently low; but that is the fault of the Vietnamese, who are shamelessly undercutting the market, and not of the planters of 100 years ago. If left to their own devices, the natives would rely on nothing but the instant carbohydrate gratification of the plantain. You never saw a place so abounding in bananas: great green barrel-sized bunches, off to be turned into matooke. Though this dish (basically fried banana) was greatly relished by Idi Amin, the colonists correctly saw that the export market was limited.
I invite you all to go look at the words of the kind of man who holds high office in the UK these days.

According to the Journal-Star‘s report, the documents on Wilson also show that agents found “videos and PDF files on Wilson’s phone of a white supremacist banner over a highway, other alt-right postings and documents related to how to kill people.”

Agents interviewed an acquaintance of Wilson’s who told them that been acting strangely since the summer, and had joined an “‘alt-right’ neo-Nazi group that he found while researching white supremacy forums online.” The FBI believes he traveled with this group to the Charlottesville rally.
I really hope they don't drop or amend the felony criminal mischief and weapons charges in favor of the terror charges, because they've got the former in the bag and if all they have for the latter is that he visited a bunch of alt-right websites where they talked about killing black people a lot, I'm worried they're gonna screw up that case.

Judge rules Ramsey defamation suit can proceed

The lawsuit was filed by Burke Ramsey, the brother of Jon-Benet Ramsey, over a CBS "documentary" about her murder. The documentary promotes the theory that Burke, who was then 9 years old, murdered his younger sister and their parents covered up the crime. Burke has been explicitly cleared of any connection to the killing by police since the early days of the case.

CBS argued that a disclaimer at the beginning of the show that the information within was "the opinions of the participants" made everything in it protected speech, and moved to dismiss Ramsey's lawsuit. But the judge determined that despite the disclaimer some information in the documentary was presented in ways that would reasonably lead a viewer to believe it was fact rather than opinion, and denied the motion to dismiss.
