Fun with digital painting and wacom tablets

So a few years ago I got a Wacom tablet (graphire 400 series, the small one) as a gift. I used it a few times, got extraordinarily frustrated with it, and tossed it into a storage bin.

I found it a few days ago. Now I can't draw. I also can't paint. My brain doesn't work very well in 2d. It's why I do SL stuff instead of drawing fantastic thingies.

That being said, I downloaded a copy of ArtRage (ArtRage 2.5 Home) and started dinking with it. It's pretty cathartic, really. The program can simulate various drawing surfaces, and also simulated various drawing tools like oil paints, chalk, pencils, etc. Each one acts differently on different surfaces. Paint swirls together, dries over time, etc. I like it more than photoshop. It feels much more... I dunno, simulationy rather than precise digital drawing, you know?

Anyways, I made my first painting. Yes, it's lame, but I spent the entire weekend trying to de-stress from my job and find something creative to do, and this was what I came up with about an hour ago.

My favorite program of all time, hands down, is Painter. I was afraid Corel would fuck it up when they got ahold of it, but they have continued to improve it. Check it out sometime, there is a demo. It's not as cheap as AR, but it has a lot more options and is the absolute best program for creating digital artwork based on real world art media.

I downloaded the demo, but I couldn't get it to do anything I wanted it to do.

Paint Tool Sai is a really nice little painter app. It works very well with tablets, and has a bunch of ways to optimize your interface for your specific tablet habits.

Painter's always been a catastrophe with all its strange crashes and quirks, but I loooove what can come out of it after a good battle.

Have you tried recent versions of it? Painter 11 has been rock solid for me, and Corel has really gone to great lengths to make it more accessible without dumbing it down.

Still on Painter X, and frankly I'm afraid to disturb it now that I've beaten it into submission

Yes, well, you're an actual artist I can barely hold a pencil correctly.
