Share a photo you've taken!

Some folks have their own collection of photos in this photography sub-forum but I thought it might be fun to do a free for all thread for anyone wanting to share any type of photos you may have taken recently.

It does not have to be a perfectly edited masterpiece or taken using a fancy camera, although that would be fine too. I'm still learning myself so camera phone shots, pin hole cameras, HDR, pics of your pet, a surreptitious pic you grabbed on your mobile of someone picking their nose, to an elaborate studio set up are all fair game. You can post it as is with no commentary or share a story behind it or tell us about the technical details behind the shot. If you're interested in learning more about photography or improving your skills, I started a thread over here with a bunch of online resources you can check out.

Now go snappity snap and share!

I was enjoying a lovely autumn afternoon yesterday when suddenly I felt an unshakeable primal sense of fear. The sky seemingly darkened, birds stopped chirping and young children began to cry. I became disoriented and began to hear whispered voices that seemed to be saying "bray ... bray ..." before I completely lost consciousness. I don't remember anything else that happened and I woke up in the hospital this morning. The neurologist told me they did a complete work up including a head CT and they discovered that I am missing my brain. The only clue as to what happened were these photos I found on my camera.

I can't remember exactly what I used. I think the top one was my phone. But the 2nd one was my Sanyo Xacti video camera that does decent stills too. I would love to say I knew what I was doing, but it was impossible to take a bad picture that day. Weather and scenery combined amazingly! If you ever make it to New Zealand, get to Christchurch and do the Lord of the Rings tour. these don't begin to convey how incredible it was

Old one. November 2004. Konica Minolta DiMage E323 (a very simple 3.2MP point-and-click, but I liked the quality of the photos it took. Sadly the battery lid on it broke).

The story behind it is rather long, but the short version is that I was going to a 'phobia school' back then and had met a rather amazing woman there I was getting more and more interested in.
That day she'd run out of the meds she was on and was feeling very bad (basically a very long lasting panic attack), so I gave her the keys to my apartment so she could go there after she'd picked up her meds at the apothecary and stay until she was feeling well enough to go home.
I'd never given anyone the keys to my apartment before and it surprised me that I did (this was after I'd been alone for eight years because I couldn't stand to be near anyone at all).

The photo was taken while I and the rest of the class went for a walk around the lakes as part of the training and I knew I'd be going home afterwards and she would be there.
We ended up being together for three very good years.

Rowdy was the majestic leader of his pride and was euthanized a few days ago due to dementia and declining health, joining his lioness Nokanda who was also put down two months previously as a result of cancer. I grabbed these shots back in June of the two of them.

I took this on the weekend during the golden hour and it reminds me of cozy sweater weather or time to break out the Forever Lazy.

Thanks Mojo. I actually used a high dynamic range technique to capture that image. It can be a bit of a controversial method as some photographers really, really hate it because it can be over the top. It has grown in popularity over the last few years with the development of some easy to use HDR programs but the basic concept has actually been around for centuries - the photographer Ansel Adams being an example.

If you're not familiar with HDR used in digital photography, it involves taking multiple exposures and melding them all together to create an image that wouldn't be possible with one exposure due to the limitations of current camera sensors. So with the scene I was trying to capture, you have the very bright sunset and the darker forest. With a normal photo, I could have exposed for the sky and it would have left the trees really dark with no detail, or exposed for the trees, leaving the sky with the highlights blown out leaving a detailess white sky, or doing something flat and middle of the road. What I did was take 3 consecutive photos, one with a normal exposure, one underexposed and one overexposed. Using PhotoMatix Pro, I processed the 3 images which took the best of each exposure, and then brought it to Lightroom for final tweaks.

It sounds quite complicated but actually pretty easy to do with even a point and shoot. Ideally it would be easier if your camera can exposure bracket but you can still do it manually. A tripod is also handy, but I did my shot hand held. Photomatix is probably the most popular program for processing your images but you can also do it in current versions of Photoshop and other programs. Trey Ratcliffe does some cool work and has a good HDR tutorial.

HDR isn't an aesthetic for everyone, or for every circumstance, as you can easily make it look too surreal but it's fun to try and it's all part of my path to learning photography stuff

I couldn't sleep last night so I decided to go all Martha Stewart and do a quick DIY project using shaped bokeh. Frankly it was a half assed job as you can see from my page torn out of a magazine creation. I was too lazy to make a full on cap and thought I could either rubber band or use post-its to stick it to my lens but that was a total fail. I had to hold my cut out onto my lens as I tried to take a photo of the street which was awkward but the effect was kinda neat. I'll spend some time later doing a better job with sturdier materials and better pics, but it's something I've been wanting to try for a while now and just might come in handy during the holidays with all the lights. I may just buy a cheap lens cap and cut out part of the middle and make two flaps that will hold different shapes I can slide in and out so it will fit compactly in my bag. Here are a couple of tips I discovered while experimenting:

- use a lens with a large aperture for good bokeh
- crank your aperture as wide as it can get
- I found it was easier to use manual focus to ensure my highlights were out of focus.
- the closer you are to your light source, the smaller the bokeh and the further away you are the larger it will be.
- lots of tutorials out there for making a shaped cap or you can even buy pre-made cutouts if you're really lazy.
- to determine how big your shape can be, you take your focal length divided by your aperture and that is the max size of your shape. So in my case I was using a 50mm prime at f/1.8 so my shape had to be under 27.7mm.

Show us if you've ever tried it before!

You can even use this technique for video!

Ooh that's a lovely photo with nice composition! I like the fact that photography is much more accessible these days with the ubiquitousness of camera phones. I wanted folks with all sorts of skills levels comfortable posting in this thread ... plus there are lots of reasons for getting into photography!
