Thank you for the thoughts.

The worst part of the situation? Being informed that it may happen again in the future at an unknown time or at any time and if it happens relatively soon (like within the next year again or so) then surgical intervention is needed. Essentially how they figure it is like this. A number of years ago I had two hernia surgeries in the stomach area and a plastic mesh was installed. The first one (involving an organic mesh) failed. Over time scar tissue built up over the mesh and that may have been what caused the kink due to the intestines getting tangled up in the scar tissue. Thus it could happen again. Damn it all. I underwent shoulder surgery at the end of March where I had major rotator cuff work done. I have no desire to have yet more surgery when I've only now recovered from the last round of it. Not much I can do at the moment other than take it easy for a couple of more days and see how things progress. So far things are looking better than they were.

Looks like as usual I'm a day late for the party. I hope you are feeling better by now Deson. But to answer your question I don't see as to why a "failback" or a "lifeboat" grid would be needed at this point. We have the SLU itself, and that is independent of SL and LL.

As for the topic at hand it seems I missed the burning at the stake and the scattering of the ashes. I'll just go ahead and post my thoughts anyway.
  1. Since this is SLU and the SL stands for Second Life it seems to me it would be more appropriate for something like this to be in SL itself and not on opensim. That would probably mean acquiring our own sim. I can fairly say that this is not going to happen.
  2. We already have a place in world. Its called the SLU club house. if the OP is still reading, search for it and visit it. I did a few weeks ago. I drank some of Cris' vodka and pee'd in his pool. Very nice.

I think the problem in getting any kind of 'new super grid' project off the ground would be getting the necessary people together.. and it's not a case of 'not enough know how'

The SLU member list is a who's who of capable people - you have people who spearheaded OpenSim... original developers, likewise for several of the better known 3rd party clients.

Capability isn't so much an issue as 'give a fuck' may be... these super capable people have 'been there and done that' and already tried to fix the problems they saw and come up with solutions... Several have become jaded, bored, or simply fed up with the limitations they saw and moved onto other projects.

It's like the concept of the SuperGroup - you've seen it before, you get a bunch of 'the best of the best' and try and weld them together into what has to be the greatest thing the world has ever seen...only it doesn't work because none of the original dynamic of their other groups are there - and you just end up with a lot of arguments and a couple of shit singles before a drama implosion.

On second thoughts.. yeah that might be pretty fucking cool to watch in a SL sense... hmmm I'll stay for the popcorn if this gets off the ground.

Hey, if we do this can I play the part annoyingly lovable bumbler who tries to help out but always manages to screw things up, with hilarious consequences?

You make some very valid points. It may not be a lackage of know how but a lackage of "Why pursue the concept?" that may be the killer in the idea. It's a pity really. I'm just hoping that people don't get too complacent. Things on the net (I also include Grids in this) have proven to be prone to suddenly vanishing without much warning and thus I worry a bit at times. Perhaps a bit too much at times and not enough at others.
