| Hi, I'm Sakai Openlife from the Openlife Grid. The concept of name poaching is most certainly an interesting one as the Openlife & Second life most likely share a good % of users. And it is quite understandable how you can become very attached to your name, especially after year(s) in the Secondlife social environment. However there are also new users too. And this is likely where I see the likelyhood of conflict. Where someone inadvertedly chooses a name that someone in SL has then comes to the Openlife and it's already taken. My first suggestion then is to 'register' your name at your earliest convenience, then run to the forums with your new Avatar legs. And throw some suggestions out there as to what my be your preferred approach to working with SL / Openlife Name conflicts. Openlife Grid Forums Home Please note to register an 'Avatar' in the Openlifegrid it is done after you 'register' on the site. So it's not your registed name that becomes your avatar, the Avatar is created in the Avatar Toolbox. *This is where the name is made. This is because one Registered Account can have as many Avatars as you like. (This might help some people seperate their work/play ppl or even their in world personalities). One 'thought' is a method for inventory across all your Avatars might be tied into one 'registered' account. So prehaps rather than your 'avatar' being the root of your inventory folder your 'Account' would be the root with Avatars inside it. So inventory of your 1st Avatar may be available to 2nd Avatar and so on.... Hope I haven't brain dumped too much here. If you make it to the website I hope you enjoy the community and get a big warm 'Welcome'. Sakai Openlife ![]() Openlife Grid > Home |

| exp(ln(Gearhead)) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | @Sakai Famous or not, no one has a right to any name in an online world where names can be chosen freely. The line however is drawn at impersonation. If the person claims to be the same named person from another world (or from RL) then there are grounds to confiscate the name or to disable it, and possibly give it to the person who was impersonated provided there is sufficient proof of identity. Shared inventory is practical for as long as you permit alt accounts (as in completely separate) so that function, transfer (and permissions) testing is still possible by one user. For information purposes, I picked up Aodhan McDunnough and Aodhan LeathBhroghan so you're sure it's me there. I think the forum account will say only Aodhan (my character really has no surname). ![]() There's no explaining this away. Many of us who are visible residents have visible names. Given that the surnames aren't pulled from a specific database of choices the likelihood that someone else finds "Joshua Nightshade" by random is very low and there can only be one intention. | |

The rule I gave is one that will hold under general conditions because of the question of "who decides fame?" A guideline that involves fame or notoriety would not hold up in the long run. All this being said the most prudent action would be that if you feel your name needs to be protected, or you want it protected, waste no time grabbing it. | |

| i think it is a big mistake to allow people to stake claim to others' sl names. having ones name poached certainly will not make one eager to enter OGL. i think OLG should look at the kiosk suggestions seriously. if OLG is that cavalier with our names how can anyone really have much faith in them thereafter? |
