If by "maliciously" you mean the intent to defame my reputation by using the avatar name I am known by in SL, as opposed to the gleeful desire to make me scream and twist in the wind for awhile, then I would agree it was not malicious intent.

Well, I took all my clothes off and couldn't get them back on until I installed mysql. I was running the simulator software because I couldn't login to the open life grid of course, but still... there's nothing quite like that newbie "omfg i lost all my clothes" feeling again.

How is this thing going to work anyway? If I run my own sim from home,will I be able to plug it into the open life grid?

On the front page, I notice the text "Pioneer... own your first region. Become a foundation resident." But the link is dead. Anybody know what that's all about?

Are You people sure that this is a real joke over at OLG they are in the process of changing web sites, the ability to chose any surname hasen't been implmented yet. And I'm not sure how much the old surname list overlapped

According to Sakai (dear God, I am making him sound like a prophet), there are future plans to plug a standalone sim into OpenlifeGrid. Obviously, there are other issues which need to be worked out first

The whole "Foundation Resident" thing is essentially a pioneer settler land sale. (Most of that land is already spoken for; people who built on a sim first get first opportunity to buy it, I am told.)

They were hoping to havethe Foundation Resident thing launched by now, the current ETA is 0900 UTC time (i.e. after Sakai has caught up on some much-needed ZZZs).

I'm so excited at that prospect. In the meantime, it's just great to have my own off-line sim for creating and designing stuff, without having to worry about instability, downtime and griefing.

If the day comes we can plug our own sims into the open life grid, I'll no longer have a need for Linden Lab's grid.

you can choose surnames if you click the 'avatar toolbox' link in the horizontal menu thingo.
you are looking in the registration area and there is only an avatar firstname option there for some unknown reason.

I'd been hearing that it didn't work. What they meant is that names made that way couldn't be used to access the grid yet not that they couldn't be reserved yet. Once i noticed you had done it i tried again and reserved the name i use here. The popup boxes over their don't have visible cursors so it easy to assume they don't work when they do.

By the way over their I'm now Samantha Phoenix. Have to check if their is a place on the SLU profile for OLG names.

From what I've read so far, you are absolutely right.

Previously, you chose an avatar name at this site:
Welcome to OpenlifeGrid

But now you create an account by clicking the register link at Openlife Grid > Home , and add avatar names via the Avatar Toolbox link.

Unfortunately though, avatars created the new way can't login yet, because Sakai is in the middle of merging the two systems.

The new implementation is brilliant because it allows multiple avatars to share the same account and presumably inventory. Something Linden Lab should have implemented in 2003, basically.

I have a Beebo Quark login from before the merger, so I suppose I could go play now. But I have this dogged, insistent desire to do so as a Brink, not a Quark.

Go for it and go play, Beebo. The worst that can happen is items you create have Beebo Quark as creator. I was told that this will make no difference whatsoever to your ability to modify etc. when your avatar name changes.

I have to admire how Sakai has dealt with the interest in OLG. Peole who were signed up before the relaunch of the website can still get in as before, but the people who signed up as a result of all the new publicity are being held back temporarily while necessary integrative work is being done.

The only problem I have is Sakai's tendency to promise things by unrealistic deadlines. But then again, he's hardly alone in that, is he?
