For the record, I fully realize that Nina had every right to reserve my SL avatar name in a new grid.

There is no mechanism for me to "own" the name of Beebo Brink. So although I was really upset that somone got to it before I did, I was reluctantly willing to pay the price -- literally -- if she chose to sell the name back to me at a rate I could afford. I would rather have paid for the name, or even lost it, than found out that someone was going to use it as their own in another grid.

I count myself as fortunate that Nina was only interested in torturing me for a short while, rather than in extortion or griefing with my SL identity. The outcome could have been much worse if someone else had gotten there first.

Just to clarify WarKirby:

If you wanted to ensure that no one could sign up to openlife with an avatar name that already exists in SL, then yes, that is technically doable. And perhaps openlife will do that, who knows, and then problem solved. But personally, I wouldn't do that for three reasons:

1. There are millions of avatar names registered on SL that are not even being used. That discards a huge number of names that could have been used in openlife with out disgruntling anyone.

2. Although I wouldn't want people picking SL names motivated by malice or greed, I also don't think that just because a generic name has been taken in SL, no one can ever have that with another company. Taking Anshe Chung would fall into the first category, taking something like Digital Metaverse would fall into the second.

3. Openlife is based on SL tech. But I'm sure they will want to evolve as an entity in their own right, and having the SL database as part of your registration process is obviously counter to that aim.

The logistics problems that I mentioned were in separating the two categories in point 2., and removing those in 1.

And - do you run around on the SL grid with the same name?

Such that, there could be, in the future, several Cocoanut Koalas running around SL?

Or are the two always and will they always be separate?

I totally agree Beebo, and I would have been seriously pissed off if my avatar names had been taken. Unless openlife want to base their registration process on the SL database, I'm not sure there is an easy solution.

If someone took your name on openlife, for example, they would only be able to use it on the openlife grid. You would still be the only Coco Koala on the SL grid.

That's exactly the kind of situation where I think it's ok to take a name that has already been taken in SL - you arrived at it independently in trying to sign up for SL, and I see no reason under those circumstances why you can't be the first to arrive at it independently elsewhere.

I do not think she did it maliciously. At least i hope not. I am rather glad my name was reserved. I actually went to the OLG site to reserve it myself so that an unnamed angry 'ex' would not do something so nasty to me (seeing how he is still bad mouthing me to people in SL 3 years later -MM-).
