My Mood: | We interrupt your regularly scheduled threads... ...with the news that both Adam Z and I have released all that information we were holding back. It's at the end of the "Something Shiny" thread, so those of you who gave up because of the dramz, you c'n all come back now, y'all. There's lots of news to discuss so let's start up a new thread. Among the news items: -- OpenlifeGrid.com has officially relaunched its website, and announced a Foundation Resident program, which will start within the next 24 hours. Hitch up the chuckwagon and go west, young man; the pionner land rush is on! -- Among the out-of-the-box features of OpenlifeGrid is the ability to CHOOSE YOUR OWN LAST NAME (Yippee!!) Also, you can set up a standalone sim for your personal use (which you cannot connect to OpenlifeGrid, yet). -- Among future OpenSim developments demonstrated and discussed at an OpenSim meeting in Oulu, Finland, were: -- A Modified SL Viewer (with OGRE 3D Engine) -- A Modified Opensim Server setup -- MESH used instead of prims!! -- non-human skeletons/avatars/animations (can define over 160 "bones") -- Python scripting instead of LSL -- Python Scripting controlling other objects (e.g. growing trees) -- Textures can be delivered via URL! (in other words, limited HTML on a prim!) -- VOIP client and server for voice -- multiple attachments for each body point -- remote desktop on a mesh surface (VNC) -- the company RealXtend wants to join and work on the OpenSimulator Project effort (Admini & Ludocraft). REX's code would be merged with the main project and their server code would be released as BSD. -- Linden Labs is aware of all this; in fact Chris Collins from LL was at the demonstration. So there you have it. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!! Last edited by Quiplash; 02-09-2008 at 11:51 PM. |

| Non-egghead will give you look like deer in spotlights as soon as you tell them stuff like "Ruby's operators are syntax sugar for the methods" or anything else straight from the features page. Don't kid yourself choosing one language over other is going to make difference here, at the bottom of it it still takes certain mindset to grasp that whole scripting/programming thing. |

My Mood: | Sakai Openlife seems to be the main mover and shaker behind OpenlifeGrid. He works out of Brisbane, Australia, and already has a company where he sometimes poaches one or two employees to help him. Sakai's real name is Steve; I don't know his last name, but I could probably dig it up if I were that interested. He just put in a 30-hour day and he's currently getting some ZZZ's. And, based on his response to my clueless n00bie questions and worries about usernames near the end of his 30-hour blitz, he is a remarkably patient man ![]() Oh, and he's about to post a full-time employee position for OpenlifeGrid, which I assume will be funded by the pioneer land rush and future sim sales. End of brain dump; you know what I know. |

There is no sanctuary. You
may think there is, but there
isn't.
| OK, now, bear in mind that I'm easily confused (some would say terminally confused) on this sort of stuff. I went to the website and I put in my name, and a password, and I got a letter to my e-mail account. It says to wait a few hours before doing anything else, right? OK, then after I wait a few hours, what do I do? coco

My Mood: | Cristiano, it's not you. The website and the processes you follow are a little confusing at the moment. You try to sign in again, sometime after 9:00 a.m. UTC time, whatever that is in your locale. (It's 3:00 a.m. for me *sigh*) Sakai wanted to focus first on getting the first 7,500+ users transferred over to the new website, the new forums, the new registration system, etc. After that, they plan to open the website up to new user sign-ups. In fact, they usually have an open meeting at that time for people to meet each other and help Sakai out with testing, etc. Last week's meeting was when I learned about all the news about future goodies for OpenSim, direct from Sakai Openlife. |

![]() Cristiano: I know what you mean, I feel just like a kid at Christmas. How often do you get to be present at the launching of a new world? And the best part is that it's all gonna be open source. All the geeks are gonna pile on because open source is teh kewl. Others are gonna join because they're pissed off at SL. Others will join (like me) so that they have that "pioneer" experience. And trust me, they ain't kidding when they say it's alpha software. You gotta know what to expect before you sign up. This is not a land where you can expect a Help Island...at least, not at first. You dive in feet-first and start dog-paddling right away. Last edited by Quiplash; 02-10-2008 at 01:02 AM. | |
