You can use and sell GPL code, you just can't make it proprietary -- you must provide the code and it must also be licensed as GPL when you redistribute it. Your comment makes it sound like you can't sell it, but you can. GPL is about freeing the software. BSD is about freeing people. GPL ensures that anyone can use and reuse the code because it's not hidden and propriety. BSD ensures that anyone can do whatever they want with the code. For example, Microsoft took their TCP/IP stack from BSD Unix. They didn't tell anyone. They didn't thank the developers. The didn't pay royalties. And that's ok, because it was licensed BSD. The whole point was so that anyone could do anything with it. On the other hand, Linux is licensed GPL. The whole point is that anyone can work on and improve the software, but if they want to redistribute their work on Linux, they must make release it as GPL as the price of being given the original code. This ensures that a company can't swoop in and make massive changes, but make them proprietary so that they close out all the other users of Linux. The whole point is to keep the software free and being used. Neither of them says you can't sell the product.

My Mood: | Oh god, if ever there were a counterpart for Nina's ego, it would be Hiro P. I foresee a long future for them, consisting of impassioned, loving conversations where they talk about how awesome they are. ![]() Edit to add: I saw "Protagonist" and read "Pendragon." I make people feel icky
| Well I've just been witness to the first sim purchase in OGL. Sakai is doing his best to work out the bugs on the purchase process. Just remember this is alphaware, don't expect even buying a sim to work correctly or smoothly. I am not trying to troll here, or naysay. I'm sure he'll be happy to correct any issues (he walked several people through sim purchase, and fixed some bugs on the spot), I just hope we don't see any posts with people screaming about not getting a sim :/

My Mood: | And that first sim purchase was by yours truly ![]() The sims will slowly be placed one by one into the Land Store over the next few hours. To see what sims are up for sale, click on "Virtual Land", along the top of the homepage, then click on the green arrow on the next page to get into the Land Store. People can buy up to four sims, there's a start-up cost of US$15 (I was wrong about this being zero earlier, sorry), and a monthly fee of US$75. SO it's US$90.00 to start off. Paypal or credit card accepted. There's more info on the sim rules available, e.g. you can move land up or down by 10 metres instead of 4, etc. --- Oh, and Moo Money and I met on-grid at OpenlifeGrid tonight and we apologized to each other. So the feud's over folks. "We now return you to your regular programming" |
