If you add an avatar name to your toolbox, do you then have exclusive use of that name, like a reservation - similar to SL? If so, how many can you reserve, and is adding the name to toolbox sufficient to secure that reservation?

Or can any given name be used many times?

Just saw Sakai Openlife post this on the OLG chatroom:
http://125.252.80.102/Opensim_Standalone_0_5_r3274.zip

Walker, I believe that is what you were looking for. She said there is/was a carrier problem with the other link.

Well. Nina, this has always been the case in SL, you just were not there as Nina. (or maybe at all).

People *will* create awesome things solely for the benefit of expression. Lots of people still do it in SL. I expect it to be more rampant in this OLG community since prims are not yet an issue and the place can truly be a commune where people share near everything - people create and share out of sheer enjoyment of seeing their things uses by others. As the place goes commercial this will change as people start viewing their fellow residents as a possible vector to dollars.

Oh that is nice.

I went to register my avatar name and someone already has... what is that about?

Well i can't help but think that someone with ill intentions registered the name Briana Dawson there on purpose.

If this is how this "OpenLife Grid" endeavor is starting, I will happily stick with LL.

edit: i will not delete this post, but i feel silly now.

Correct on all accounts except one; at present you cannot connect your standalone sim on your own personal computer with the OpenlifeGrid grid. I'm sure that this is on the to-do list, however.

Talk to Nina; she said in this very thread (go back to post #21) that she was going to start registering well-known SL avatar names. I bet you anything she signed up for it.

Her exct words were: "i am registering all the sl famous people right now.
kind of like domain squatting, but av names instead."

Do you know if there is a limit to the number of avatars you can add to your toolbox? And when they are added, are they securely reserved? Will anything be done by people blatantly taking well-known names in SL?

Forgive me if you don't have the answers Quip - I don't know what involvement you have with openlife, etc.

For what it's worth, I just performed a little test. I added a test name to the toolbox and then deleted it. I then tried to add that same name up again and was able to. So, if someone has taken your name as a joke, it can easily be reversed. Let's hope.

Briana, I just spoke with Sakai over on the OLG chatroom, she said "ok you should suggest her to post to the forum
and we'll chase it", about your name being taken.

My involvement iwth OLG is purely from a super-eager and super-interested bystander and potential sim buyer.

In answer to your questions, you can probably create as many avatars as you wish (there's probably some internal technical limit like 256); any avatar you create is essentially reserved, since nobody else can then use that name; and it is impossible to determine what someone's intentions might be when they choose a new avatar name.
